lightest pedals for clip/strap use?
 

I’m seeking the most crazy lightweight high-tech pedals for my road bike, which I ride with strapless toe clips. I am done with clipless pedals and have returned to strapless clips, using a cheapo pair of nashbar pedals. It seems like there is a bewildering variety of mountain bike oriented high tech pedals that aren’t clipless, but they seem to all have little changeable traction spikes which I’m guessing would get hung up in my sneakers while I’m trying to slid onto or off the pedal, and I can’t tell if the high tech mountain pedals I’ve seen online would accept a strapless clip or a clip/strap combo. Anybody know of something super light weight in titanium or something else exotic, to which I could affix strapless clips or clips with straps? My rides tend to be 20 to 60 miles long on mixed terrain, on roads and on bike trails. I wear Innovate 315 trail runners most of the time and they feel just fine. Are the plastic Eastern Crown pedals, at 12.3 ounces for the pair, the lightest alternative? I'd rather go titanium than plastic, but the Eastern Crowns seem to be well liked. Advice, please!

Right. Those are the type of strapless clips I'm talking about. Those pedals -- interesting that for something so unusual they don't list the weight. Wonder why?

The word is, when the weight is not given, that means it's heavy. They would make a point to say how many grams if it were worth mentioning.

Not the lightest pedal at 300+ grams. The Gordon mini clips weigh 68 grams:

I tried the mini clips once and didn't like them, but YMMV. I believe forum member Markaitch uses them so maybe he'll chime in....


A more cost effective choice would be the MKS GR-9's. It is also said to go well with mini clips:

@motorapido...i use those mks chrome half-clips combined with wellgo r0-25b pedals, not so crazy or hi-tech, but they are claimed 240g (& reasonably priced as well) so it makes a pretty lightweight yet inexpensive combo.

i love my mini-clips...light, easy to get in & out of, adjustable "tension" by squeezing or opening them - they do everything i need. but you are not going to find much love for them around here. anytime i post a pic of my bike, the 1st response is always something along the line of how stupid clips without straps are. so if you go with them, you will need thick skin on that subject.

i have been sorely tempted by the gordon clips already mentioned but they are so pricey...maybe when these eventually break i'll splurge.

MKS had made a knock off of the white industries pedals by the way. They are about 1/3 of the cost too.

Did ride with the white industries pedals for a bit, and they were definitely the most comfortable "toe clip" style pedal I have used. Back sides are worthless is the reason I got rid of them. A few weeks later I regretted it, but not enough to buy them again.

You can't be racing if you're willing to give up clipless, so what does it matter? And strapless clips?

The clip holds the strap open... Without the strap it's more of a foot guide

There was a discussion about such pedals in C&V a few months ago. I seem to remember someone posting a sub 100 gram pedal, but my memory is not that great.

These by Assos are nice @ 120 grams apiece. Probably not that great with those half-clips though. Probably not all that good with anything but slotted cleats TBH, but you could cut your own replacement parts out of Al and have something that'll hold street shoes better.

Well they do keep your foot from sliding forward off the pedals, but still, yeah, pretty much zero foot retention.

Something tells me these are light, if you can find any. Gipiemme Crono Special.

They only take 3-bolt clips, though, not the two-bolt.
