Scratched/infected cornea can't ride
 

The other day I woke up with the worst eye infection of my life. Almost complete blindness out of my right eye. 3 days and 4 dr visits later I'm still suffering. Prior to this I was in an amazing grove, cycling any chance i got.

Not being able to ride has been so miserable for me. I gave it a shot today but it's just too dangerous with one eye. I can't imagine being permanently blinded in one eye. If I can't ride for a week or so how
Badly will that set me back? I was just starting to get over the initial soreness stage as I've been riding for less than a month.

I'm also wondering if I should invest in cycling glasses to keep debri out of my eyes. It's possible that while riding I caught something under my contacts that caused this. However it was more likely just over wearing my lenses. Has anyone else ever had an eye injury that forced them to stop riding?

Who knows how you got the scratch, you'd be the best judge of when it may of happened, but I'd definetely get some cycling glasses. They don't even have to be cycling specific, but I would say that I do prefer the ones I have that are.

Glasses give you a lot of benefits in things such as shielding your eyes from the sun, from foreign objects and even just letting your eyes stay moist better by blocking some of the wind.

If you are unsure, just pick up some cheap sports glasses. If you like them, keep them or upgrade to some nicer ones.

Definitely wear glasses, if you need prescription glasses Oakley sport glasses are available with prescription lenses. Years ago I went snow blind for 3 long days in Antarctica. The thought of being permanently blind was terrifying. Now I wear sunglasses fanatically.

I like the interchangeable lenses, I have a set of clear lenses and a set of black tinted ones. They were ~$300 in my prescription.

Ride the trainer & watch the olympics.

Sorry to hear this. The trainer idea is a temporary fix. My wife's left eye is blind since birth, but she is able to ride and drive without problems. Of course, she never had to adjust since she was born this way. Stay positive and know that you should be able to ride despite this setback.

Ha exactly what I've been doing. Glad that cycling is over though, that'd make my cravings so much worse.
