New SPD SL Pedals-What cleat to use????
I'm 62 and have been around bikes most of my adult life. However, I'm just getting back into cycling after a few year hiatus, and purchased a pair of Shimano PD-R540 pedals. I purchased a pair of Louis Garneau shoes but the "floating" cleats that came with the pedals stick out past the edge of the sole of the shoes. It looks weird, and I was wondering if this is normal. I'm also wondering what are the differences between floating and fixed cleats. Thanks....

It's normal for the cleats to extend out. Try the yellow cleats with float first. These are the ones that come packaged with new pedals. Some people don't like the feel or for some biomechanical reason need the red zero float cleats, but most are better off with the yellow ones. Have fun and enjoy the ride!

Thanks. These were the cleats that came with the pedals, but they look very strange sticking out off of the edge of the sole like that....
