When is the BEST time for N+1

For finding the best value, or the lowest prices? I'd expect at the end of the season but that's way too general, and not necessarily the best bargains. I've watched for several years, sales come and go, but I've never nailed it down.

What say you? For someone willing to wait, who doesn't need another bike with any urgency, and is flexible about brands, type of bike and all other aspects of it, is there one short period of time where he could find the absolute best deals in general? A Black Friday for bikes sort of thing? Or must you remain vigilant and pounce when the opportunity presents itself?

Best time for N+1 is when you find a new bike you want that you can afford.

OK, slightly more seriously. If you want a popular bike, beginning of November or January are good times to get this/last year's bike and maybe at a discount. That's before and after the Christmas shopping season.

If you want something out of the ordinary, like a touring bike, you might be able to work out a deal early in the year if you pre-order one, and pay for it early. That keeps the dealer from having to carry it on float. Stuff like that, most dealers don't carry a lot of, and so there's not much chance they'll have one your size at the end of the season. It also varies by location -- don't look for much in the way of full suspension bikes in Miami, or road bikes in upper New York state.

When ever I open my wallet...

Trying to buy a new bike on sale is a crap shoot, you can wait until the end of the season and hope that what you want is available in your size. In my case if I see something in my size to begin with (XL) I had better buy it quick because in a few months it will be gone forever. I bought a Redline R530 in the XL, I got the last one in the warehouse and they dropped that size from the line up the next year and discontinued the bike completely the following year. Ditto my Redline 9.2.5 in the XL frame size.

Gentlemen, "For finding the best value, or the lowest prices" pdlamb had some good suggestions (thanks).

If I'm going to impulsively drop some cash on something I suddenly feel like I need, it's more likely computer hardware,
peripherals, software. We all have different weaknesses. I'm interested in actual time frames for the best bargains for bicycles, even specific to different distributors, if anyone knows.

I don't think I'm violating any contracts because bargain hunting isn't criminal, but I'll be sure to check out those handbags

Sometimes a popular model ships most of the batch out in pre season orders,
[taken at, like the interbike trade show, coming up]
and dealers that order mid season , find that bike sold out at the distributor's level.

becomes a snooze you lose situation..

So late season it might come down to less popular models, or something about them that's generally a deal-killer right?

By coincidence I got the nashbar closeout catalog in the mail yesterday, but only ordered some apparel. I know they tend to yo-yo their prices and specials. Do you think they'll get lower on another cycle, or are seriously clearing out?

If you don't mind driving a few miles Peachtree Bikes will probably have their fall sale next month. I picked my 2011 Felt last October as the 2012 models were arriving. Got 25% off the regular price. I'm HAPPY.

Anytime over the next year should be good. It was a funny year in the bike industry - at least here in Canada. Sales of new bikes were down across the board, but repairs were up and sales of accessories were up. People were willing to drop hundreds of dollars on high quality extras, but not thousands of dollars on the newest model.

Which doesn't necessarily mean your LBS will have what you want in stock. It largely means that manufacturers will have a lot of last years models that they'll be offerring to your LBS at discounted prices. If you talk to some prople you know you might get them to order something they otherwise wouldn't. Of course, the sooner the better if you have something particular on mind.

Otherwise ..... there are some outfits that'll simply buy in bulk, strip the bikes, and sell the parts over the Internet as OEM equipment.
