iPhone App?
 

I was woundering if there is an App better than the one I am currently using, I have an iPhone 4s. I use MapMyTracks, i like this app and have tried others but they do not offer the range of options and are pretty lame. But MapMyTracks is not specialifcally for cycling, it has a menu for that but not dedicated to it. What are some of the other apps used for tracking your ride?

Cyclometer or Endomondo are the two I like best. Track My Tour is another to look at. MotionX-GPS is a nice GPS app if you have a need to use maps stored on the phone vs having to access on line as you go.

I'm generally happy with Strava.

i do appreciate all the posts on this. I am going to give Endomondo a try, it seems to display information I like to see. I don't like having to fish for information, I like having it ready when I want it.

Dang, I sure got spoiled. When I rode century rides 15 years ago this stuff wasn't at our finger tips without the 'ol Cat-eye, even then you had to go through steps to find what you wanted.

Map my Ride is fairly decent. It calculates elevation and has audio notifications at five mile intervals.

Strava for Iphone.

I like cyclemeter too. I like how it gives you a map on top of google maps, though I'm sure other apps do it.

That was a group ride, it was a leisure pace and a lot of fun (also one of the few rides I have mapped that doesn't start from my house)

I've tried them all. Runkeeper is the best iPhone app out there. Everyone else is just wrong :) Their biggest problem is the occasional bug that gets introduced and unresponsive support. Doesn't happen often, but it's happened a couple of times in the year and a half I've been using it and it was frustrating albeit short lived. As far as functionality, only Cyclemeter has a better phone app, but a non-existent Web interface. One of the nicest things about Runkeeper is the reporting you get online and the ability to have 'friends' that you can keep up with. Other apps have pieces and parts of everything Runkeeper does, but it's the best overall app out there. Trust me :)

Gary brings up a good point and maybe why I migrated to Cyclemeter as my app. The best app is the one that does all the things you need and has the least amount of bugs. For me I didn’t even consider the social aspect as I don’t really care about that, but others that might be what they are looking for. A person doing a TA tour will have much different needs than someone running a repeat ride wishing to look for certain times and speeds over some section of the ride. When I started using Cyclemeter I still had my phone bar mounted and enjoying watching the map and or the display. I have grown away from wanting the distraction and now leave it inside my bar bag to take a look at when I need to by stopping. I like getting done for the day and getting the email and reviewing it then and if I want to share the info do it then.

If you wear reading glasses as I do something that has big simple text showing speed and miles is nice if you have your phone bar mounted.

Interesting set up in this picture. I see a power cord, What were you using to power your iPhone?

I used Mapmyride but switched to Cyclemeter. Cyclemeter uses about half as much battery juice. Also, I have it set so that every 5 minutes it will tell me how far ahead or behind I am versus my best/median/worst time on the route I'm taking. Keeps me motivated to improve every time. I don't know of another app that does that.

Another vote for Cyclemeter. I used to use Mapmyride before I had a handlebar mount for my phone, and used the 30 second delay so I could toss the phone into my pannier. Then, upon reaching my destination, half the time would see, "GPS signal is low; start anyway?" You could have heard my howls of outrage three states away. So I switched to Cyclemeter and could not be happier.

What are you using to mount your IPhone to your bars?

I use this. I've been very happy with it; it's rock steady and (so far) totally weather proof. My only wish is that the hard shell battery backpack I have for my 3GS fit in it. Otherwise, it's perfect.

When I started out with the iPhone 3 there wasn’t much in the way of good cases. With the iPhone 4 the otter box was what I used and is no way water proof but adds a good layer of impact protection. I agree the lifeproof case is a very nice case for this type application. I started using a mophie battery case about a year ago for daily use and love the extended battery life. If they came out with a clone lifeproof/,mophie I could really get into that.

Here is a photo of the first charger I made for my iPhone 3. It was a 12v supply using AA batteries and a car charger to regulate charging. It worked very nice for times when you were away from AC power for long periods of time.

I have now switched to a commercial product that takes both AA recharge and throwaway batteries it is both a USB charger and an AA recharger. It also powers a small USB light I take along. There are a few similar products doing this but this is the one I use now. Link and photo of my setup below.

I have grown away from wanting my phone mounted to the bar for several reasons the biggest is it’s for me a distraction to riding and I didn’t like it baking in the sun for long hours. I know the phone is made to take extreme heat and have had tech people tell me that is never a worry. I’m just old school about overheating electronics I guess. I run on all my bikes with some kind of a small bar bag that opens facing me. I keep the phone in the mophie case on top along with my reading glasses that I can’t see the phone that great without them maybe another reason I like to pull over to view the GPS. Sunlight and the iPhone screen don’t work well together and I find the lid of my bar bag helps with shading the display also. With the battery case and not keeping the screen turned on I can wait till the end of the day to think about what best method to use to charge the phone. I carry four recharge cells that are my normal backup power they hold a charge a few days. I carry four throwaway cells that can hold a charge for years as backup and if I use the Tekkeon when I get AC power it can charge the phone, mophie and the four AA’s recharge batteries.
