Has anyone watched any episodes of NBC's post-apocalyptic science fiction television drama series, Revolution?

It's set abut 15 years in the future after an unknown phenomenon disabled all technology dependent on electricity on the planet, ranging from computers and electronics to car engines, jet engines, and batteries. People were forced to adapt to a world without functioning technology.


They're all walking around and riding horses, but I don't seen a single bicycle!

Seems to me bikes would see lots of use in such a situation. They're far more plentiful than horses and move people far more efficiently than feet.

From what I've read, it's premises are pretty stupid. I haven't read anything yet that entices me to watch. I guess I'll just keep watching Farscape, which while it's silly, is not insultingly so.

Nice use of crossbows. Remember kids, rifles and gunsmithing postdate the invention of electricity and won't work in a post-apocalyptic world, especially because no police department in any major US city has a large cache of automatic weapons or anything...

Yeah, and the bikes thing.

Looks silly, don't have time to waste on this show. Currently I'm watching dexter, homeland and boardwalk empire. All good shows with the exception of dexter which has gone so far down hill it makes me sick.

I tried watching it and I just could not stand the ridiculous premise. The whole concept within the show seem flawed and things just don't mesh together well.

I have a feeling the absence of bikes in the show reflects an absence of bikes in the minds of the writers and producers.

Heck, in today's powered world, some places have a third of people getting around on bikes, but in the US, only about 1% do.

I'd be willing to bet that in an LA TV executives world, bike use is probably less than 1%

I'd be willing to bet the same is true of adults with jobs or families almost anywhere in U.S. or Canada, once the adults no longer live near a college campus or in a few bike enthusiast enclaves like Portland.

I'm sure actual figures differ. As an example, Vancouver's overall trip by bicycle rate is about 4.5% of traffic, yet in a couple of neighbourhoods of Vancouver it's 12% and a recent study done by our local transit authority showed a 26% increase in the amount of trips on bicycles (this is in stark contrast to the 4% increase in trip by automobile and the 25% decrease of trips by car to the downtown area with a 10% increase in amount of people entering the downtown area)

Until indor bike racks are the norm, very few people will choose a bicycle as transportation. Even in "nice" town bike theft is an issue. If I was promised a safe place to put my bike I'd almost never use the car.

Yet in European and Asian countries people choose bicycles as transportation on a regular basis even with outdoor storage and the same rates of theft.

I say this show reveals the cultural conundrum of bicycle use.

How so? If I were king of a territory, and wanted to limit problems, I would absolutely take guns away from people.



Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of ridiculous things about the show, but that is not an example of one of those things.

Yeah, I'm sure you will rule un-opposed. You can try to take guns away from people...key word being "try". You are not a gun owner are you?

You are trying to set-up a TV world based on a people that had a country founded on rebellion, rose up against oppression, and built a nation on very strong principles. Basically you have a nation full of armed people that will not take crap from anybody, and you are going create a TV show wherein they become absolutely docile and submissive in the face of a massive power failure. I dont think so!

You started a thread that has nothing to do with cycling. Only that the show has no bicycles. How much of a discussion do you expect to get out of that?

"No bicycles"
"Yeah, no bicycles, stupid"
"No bicycles, impossible"
"No bicycles, no way can they do that?"

Well, I hoped that people would discuss how out of the loop the use of a bicycle is in the US public consciousness.

I think what and how the general population sees and thinks of cycling has everything to do with cycling and those who cycle.

I agree. So much tangental fare in the scenario.

Yeah, I've watched it and am not sure if I'll keep watching it. Last nights episode one of the main characters announced hes was going to Chicago which was about 1000 miles away, he was asked "Whatcha gonna do, WALK to Chicago?" My immediate thought was WHY NOT RIDE A BIKE? 10, 100 mile days and he would be there. Perhaps even 20 or 30 days but it sure would cover a lot more ground on 2 wheels than walking.

I think bikes would be a hot commodity in such a world. You can cover so much more ground on them.

but yeah everything about this show is pretty stupid. I think it was made for the preteen Justin Bieber audience that's how dumb it is. the lame acting doesn't help either. I saw half of one episode and turned it off.

Not to me. Horses eat lots and crap even more. They bite too. Bicycles are the most efficient transportation machines humans have ever developed.

horses are more cinematic than bicycles. that's probably the main reason.
and its a lot easier to shoot a rifle or a crossbow on a horse than on a bike.

but if they wanted to be more realistic they would show people using both, horses and bicycles. but from what I have seen there is nothing remotely realistic or intelligent about this show.
