Oh, ok then.

*yawn*

Oh, you got it wrong: I'm not from "San Fran" - if your reading skills allow, have another look at the location field and try again.

What about htose of us who wear Rugby shorts to....

Play Rugby.

Oh yea now I remember, we get to wear what we want and no one gives us grief about it.

Me, I tend to wear the gear for the activity, it seems there is a reason activity specific gear was created.

Amen, Brother! If anyone is put off by bicycling clothes and thus doesn't ride a bike, they are looking for excuses.

Remove cycling clothes, put on English-style tweed hunting outfits. Seems SOOOOO much more practical for "ordinary people." But it is pretty cool looking. Too many grown men (and women) putting too much thought into what other people wear on bikes in this thread.

I like my lycra on my road bike, but I also ride some pretty serious mileage in skinny jeans and flannel, hipster-style. Sometimes I'm on a beach cruiser wearing a bathing suit and no shirt. Most of us managed to ride bikes all over the place as kids without devoting too many brain cells to what constitutes the best cycling apparel. Wear whatever you want, wear it proud, and leave people who choose to wear something different alone.

FWIW, no one from San Francisco or the Bay Area in general for that matter, calls it San Fran. And certainly not Frisco.

And FWIW, spandex is about the only thing that keeps my junk, humble or prodigious as it may be, from getting all banged about as I pedal.

I wear tighty whiteys generally. If I hop on any of my my bikes it's painful trying to get my junk in a neutral position unless I have the firm grip of spandex keeping it out of harm's way.

Or the seams will chafe me to no end.

I don't think I'm all that well endowed but I really have no frame of reference. Maybe the OP's 'milage' is a lot less.

I find spandex etc... incredibly comfortable, but I hate the pads in bike shorts. I don't need the pad, it makes me uncomfortable, and it looks like i'm wearing a diaper. I'd wear compression leggings everywhere if it were socially acceptable.

Go down to your local fabric store and buy a seam ripper. Take out the threads holding the pad in. Problem solved.

And this is precisely what people like the OP don't understand. Cycling-specific attire is comfortable ... and it looks good too.

I love most, if not all, of my jerseys. I'd wear them to work if I could!

I used to have shorts I really liked as well, unfortunately the manufacturer changed a few things and the newer versions are less likeable now, but I'm working on finding some good pairs again. However, I have tights I really like. I just bought a new pair recently, wore them for an afternoon ride, and stayed in them all evening because they were so comfortable.

We don't dress in cycling-specific attire to put on airs or something ... we dress in it because it's comfortable and attractive.

Or just buy shorts without the padding.

Yep.. El cheapo Starter compression shorts from Walmart. Under Armour leggings on top when it gets cool. A revelation in comfort.

I was thinking that rww already had the padded shorts hence the complaint about padded shorts. Removing the pad would save him some money.

i thought about wearing this as it is perfect for cold canadian winter. It has no spandex in it.

I could have some difficulties with the pedals tho.

I just don't like the "superhero look".
I used to be a bike courier & rode many miles/week, usually with regular casual shorts or pants w/boxer shorts. A lot cheaper than bikey spandex & without the giggle factor. Worst chafing I ever got while cycling was with spandex shorts that chafed horribly across the naughty bits. It was a cheap pair admittedly--the good stuff costs a lot of $$. Look at old pictures of, say, UK bike tourists...they didn't wear racing-type clothes.

In some 27 or so years (off and on) of riding a bike to work, I've heard every possible reason from my co-workers about why they don't commute by bike.
Number one reason is fear of traffic, followed closely by lack of time and fear of mechanical break-down/flat tire. Not ONE person has EVER said they didn't ride because they are afraid of having to wear lycra. Not. One.

On the other hand, I have had one coworker tell me she couldn't possibly ride a bicycle because she just couldn't bring herself to wear a helmet, and, of course, it's illegal to ride without the helmet ... so ...

Cool, rather than riding in a comfortable pair of $40 cycling shorts and changing into a $20 pair of jeans at work, I can just get a $128 pair of pants.

Computer Game Attire

Although some people say that they play better with "performance" gaming gear, I find that I play my best in regular pajamas. Sometimes even wearing slippers rather than my specific "gaming" shoes.

Heavy perspiration during gaming can be sopped up using regular "towels" rather than microfiber chamois sold at video game boutiques.

Discuss...
