Tweed?! In Atlanta?! Ask Laura Bellinger about wearing tweed sometime in July. I'll bet she'll not be as enthusiastic about it then.

And is anyone forcing you...or anyone else...to wear Lycra? I don't recall anyone telling me what to wear other than some curmudgeons who are offended by Lycra's very existence. I wear what works for me, not because it is fashion. I encourage others to do the same.

Bike ride wearing tweed? Great excuse for a party! (as long as it's not too hot or raining.)

I've worn out shorts in the crotch from the friction on the saddle, though; I'd hate to do that to a good pair of wool tweed britches. My preference for daily wear is the cheaper, longer lasting spandex. That doesn't catch on my saddle and so it's functional for me. But if it makes somebody else happy to ride with a group of like minded people wearing "normal" clothes once a year or so, that's OK too.

My daily commute is eleven miles (RT), using the local MTA Bike/Ride.
I wear street/office clothes every day*. I really have no interest in lycra and logo-wear jerseys but that's just me.

I'm extending the bike ride, shortening the MTA part, a little more at a time. I'll be riding the 15 miles in (1 way) before long.

* on rainy days; I concede that I will get wet and wear stuff that I will change out of.

What, this thread is about fringe fashion? I thought it'd be about naked cycling as public outreach. Hmmmph!

So dressing up in some vintage tweed as an homage to an imaginary days of cycling yore is better than wearing modern clothing designed for the sport. You just can't fake that kind of crazy.

Doesn't Ralpha make pants without flat felt seams in the crotch for cycling? I don't think people that prefer Cycling specific clothing, be it spandex or wool, care one whit what others wear. It seems as if the insecure people do care and so can wear just want they want. It isn't like people wearing spandex notice or care. But some things do work better with cloths designed for a more active lifestyle. Basket Ball is easier to play in shorts and tennis or Basketball shoes. Not that it couldn't be played in slacks and dress shoes.

I just read the whole article. The ride was 4 miles, with 2 stops. That's what happens when you ride in clothes that chafe.

Flat-felled, said the seamstress. Clothes. Cloth is what you make the clothes from.

We can always count on you to be the sour grape that spoils the good news in any thread.

Tweed is but one example of dress clothing so simmer down already!

You might want to look at all the posts in the thread. It seems the idea went over like a turd in a punch bowl...which by any measure isn't good news.

I wear normal clothes while cycling too. Shorts and a t-shirt in warm weather, long-sleeve shirt and exercise pants in cold.

Whenever I see a spandex/bibbed cyclist, I assume they're trying to look better than they are, or they're training for a race.

I've always associated Spandex with road bike racing and road bike clubs. Once I traded my road bike club for my touring club, the Spandex disappeared. Of course, my riding outfit would totally depend upon the occasion, the whether, and the terrain.

While I could never see myself in Tweed, I would opt for other types of material, other than Spandex!

Fun fact: one may ride a bicycle in practically any type of clothes. Pick the clothes that work for you.

When I see someone on a bicycle, I assume they riding a bicycle. If I make a judgment about about their clothing, I keep it to myself. If you ask me why I ride in bicycle specific clothing, I'll tell you why and why it works best for me. I might even suggest that you try it yourself before you decide what's best for you and, if you don't like it, so be it. But you can't decide what's best for me nor comment on how I look nor if I'm trying to 'look' better than I am. It's not your place to make that judgment.

Oh I make very opinionated judgements about cyclists wearing wacky (IMO) bicycle outfits and costumes to commute and bike around town or go on nostalgia tours, but I keep the judgements and opinions to myself. They are my bicycling comrades, after all.

I have no problem with them doing this.

I do have a problem with the the title of this thread and the idea that going with somethgin decades out of date might inspire others to ride. Instead I'd be inclined to think it makes others think cyclists are stuck in the 1900s, and not in a fun circus way like highwheelers woulf provide.

I think riders should wear what makes them comfortable. What I can't stand are the ignorant riders that can't figure out that we all ride for fun. Because a rider wears spandex and cleats, doesn't mean they aren't having fun or enjoying the ride. I can't comment on commuters or utility riders' fun as I have never done so.

Ignorant comment from the article:

"It's just riding for pleasure instead of running the roads," Palus said as she prepared to join the ride. "It goes back to childhood, to riding for fun, to enjoy it. No spandex or cleats."

Now why would I want to go cycling, if I couldn't show off my butt in lycra?
