Wet weather SPD cycling shoe
 

This time of year with the shoes I have (Shimano M087), I am constantly dealing with either cold feet, even with wool socks, sometimes 2 pairs on, Or wet, soggy feet. I have made a couple of improvements by sealing the vents on top and below where the cleat attaches. Both, especially sealing the bottom have helped a little.

I could get a set of overshoe, but that seems like it would be temporary solution. As I commute, it would get wear daily leading to probably getting replaced every year.

What I have really been eying and thinking seriously about getting are some winter cycling shoes. The ones catching my eyes are Shimano SH-MW81. Problem being availability, not a whole lot of in store options I have seen to try them on. I am concerned they might be a little too warm. But as it is, my feet are cold after rides. So figure warm is better then cold or cold and wet.

Anyone have experience with this shoe or like models?

I'd love to recommend something, but it's hard enough to find bike shoes that fit my size 13, B-width feet. Frozen feet has put a damper on my riding recently.

Have to asked at River City Bicycles? I know they have a couple "winter" shoes- they're pricey, though.

For the price of those shoes, even if you bought a waterproof bootie, you could replace the booties every year for the next five years, and still have the flexibility of going without.

I have the same shoes you do now, and I wear my Garneau covers when the temps get down to the low 40s or below. I don't ride near freezing, because around here that always means ice, but I've been on some 12-15 mile rides with my shoe covers, and they warm up decently after about 5 miles. For me, keeping my feet dry is most important, they'll usually warm up with riding.

There's also Northwave's "Celsius GTX" and "Celsius Arctic GTX" winter mountain bike shoes, and their "Fahrenheit" winter road shoe, but those are probably not even as widely available as the Shimano.

Commuting all winter in the Seattle area, most days I'm most comfortable with SPD sandals. No fabric, nothing to hold water, they're much warmer than soggy shoes and socks.

When it gets colder, upper 30s, I'll use waterproof breathable socks.

Below freezing I switch to SPD-equipped boots.

Tonight on the way home from work, I stopped by River City Bicycles. I had tried a few other shops and they did not have carry or have in any winter shoes. To my surprise they had this shoe and in a 45 and 46. both would work, the 46 with a little more wiggle room that would work for an extra pair of socks when it gets colder.

I have to say the shoe was very comfortable. A little different to get on and off but oh so comfortable. I am sold.

On the way home on the train, I ran into another rider I noticed he had on some winter shoes on, his were PI boots. He had the same POV where my head has been at. That being a dedicated shoe specifically for wet colder weather, easy on and off (no need to take off over shoe and then shoe), no need to buy new over shoes every year etc.

Hopefully in the next couple of days will be able to get them.

What brand of shoe did you settle on? I have a hard time with shoes of all sorts since my feet are US size 13, B-width.
