Brooks B17 Imperial with laces

Hi, I just registered with these forums to ask this question. I tried doing a search, but couldn't come up with anything. If anybody could answer the following, give me a link, or a link to where to ask this question, it would be much appreciated. I just purchased a Brooks B17 Imperial (Standard) and was not aware prior to purchase, what the purpose of the laces were. My brother has a regular Brooks B17, so he can't give me any suggestion on what to do with them. What am I supposed to do with them? As I pulled it out of the box they were already coming undone. Also, what to do with the extra (red white and blue) laces?

I think they help maintain the shape of the saddle, which isn't quite as stable as a standard B17 due to the cut-out- the sides tend to flare out over time. My Imperial came laced as well, but didn't have any extra laces. I have replaced the original (it broke) with regular rawhide lacing, and it is just fine. I think the colored lacing is just for decoration.

Hi Cody, welcome to the forums and the Brooks club. I believe that is correct. Someone over in the C&V forums may have a better more tech answer but I think Demon has it right.

I tried Brook years ago when I was wannabee cyclist but didn't like them. A few years ago I gave one a chance again and I am in love with them. I think I have 6 now plus two leather of differen brands.

I have a narrow Imperial. It's best to lace the saddle using all the holes to prevent excessive sagging. You may need to use two shoe laces. Once the saddle has sagged, it's more difficult to bring it back into shape.

I also lace my Brooks Professional. This is the best way to retain the firmness for a long long time.
