Am I sweating or leaking?

Letís get ďpersonalĒ for a bit Ö

Over the past few months, Iíve noticed an unusual dampness on the front and bottom areas of my groin and the chamois of my bike shorts. It may be that during the warmer months when I sweat more I wouldnít have noticed the dampness since Iíd be damp all over. But in the winter months I began to notice it.

Iíve had perineal pressure problems Ė and the numbness that comes with it - for a while. I think this problem occurs frequently among male cyclists (of which I am one). I bought a Brooks saddle with a cutout to help deal with it. It helped some. Iíve tweaked the saddle tilt and front-back position and that helped some. The numbness still occurs but isnít as bad as it used to be. Iíve had no history of incontinence and all my junk functions normally.

So, I canít tell if what Iím experiencing is just sweat getting trapped in an area without much ventilation or if the perineal pressure is causing me to leak a small amount of urine.

Iíve got to believe that some of you have experienced the same thing. If so, what did you do about it? BTW, Iíll be seeing my GP tomorrow for my annual wellness visit and will ask him about it. But heís not a cyclist so may not have any first-hand experience with it or any patients who have mentioned it to him.

You need an opinion from a urologist with an interest in urodynamics.

It's not OK to keep riding with numbness, it causes all sorts of unpleasant problems. Sort out your position on the bike.

I have had prostrate cancer & since had to wear pads due to lack of control of my bladder. Now the issues are do I wear underpants with the riding gear in order to keep the pad in place as I have found this to be very uncomfortable / chaffing etc. Any ideas on this would be most welcome as I am due to ride in Belguim for a week on a tour in May & need all the help in this regard. Cheers

Wow - am sorry to hear about that. All I can suggest is just to pack a few of each item you might need, and then just to try out different combos and see what works for you. I'm sorry I can't be of any more specific help.

I hope your tour goes well.

A date with an urologist is in order. An enlarged prostate can be part of the problem. I'd definitely get the numbness thing solved. It took me 5 or 6 saddle changes and I'm still not totally satisfied.
