Need light advice
 

I ride a lot in the dark and have been using Turbo Cat lights for around 12 years or so ( 15W on the bars and a 10w on my helmet) I've been pretty happy with them but it's time to replace the batteries on both of them and it's going to be over 200.00 to do so. I'm thinking technology has really improved since I bought those lights and maybe I'd be better off just replacing them with new LED lights instead. I'm hoping to spend no more then 250.00 for the replacement of both lights.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Specific recommendations about make and model of replacement lights would be appreciated.

I'm running a Lezyne Power Drive, and couldn't be happier for the <$100 I spent. I think it is 400 lumens (max), and has three brightness levels plus a blinking mode. I ride early mornings, and want to see & be seen. This thing will really light up the road (and drivers). I run just this light on my bars.

Go to Amazon or Fleabay and search for "1500 lumen Cree XML T6 bicycle lights". You'll get lots of hits and most of them are going to be in the $30 range. The light output isn't 1500 lumen. It's going to be more in the 500 to 600 lumen range. You can also search for 1200, 1400, 1600 and 1800 which will give you similar results but they all put out around 600 lumens. That's going to be about as bright as your 15W halogen if it was overvolted.

The light head is rugged but the batteries may not be. The batteries are cheap, however and, at $30, you can't really go wrong. For perspective, $30 is cheaper than many low intensity "be seen (but not really)" lights. I have 3 of these lights and have been using them extensively for about 9 months without any problems...even with the batteries.

Battery less , Hub Dynamo & wired LED head and taillights are my fave.

On the two bikes that I happen to have that don't have generators I use a usb rechargeable light set. It is a Night Rider. I bought it on deep discount somewhere. I also like their Mini Newt system.

Picked up this light based on cyccommute recommendations on other posts and I very happy with it, esp the price, $31. Thanks cyccommute! I believe its sold out, but they have many other ones that are similiar. So bright!
