WOW! Some of you guys must have solid brass balls the size of a canteloup! I got up to 36mph on my commuter(my only bike at the moment) and was seeing dead relatives, childhood memories flashing before my eyes, and being profoundly glad I am a Christian. I'm not much of a risk taker anymore, I guess fatherhood changes a guy No criticism intended, if you are comfortable with that kind of speed, go for it! Don't worry, I'll get out of your way!

Once drafted behind a greyhound bus up to 43 mph on a flat. It was like riding into a vacuum. Anyone who has seen breaking will at least want to try it. Who knows how fast I could have gone if I had an 11 tooth cog. Come on, it must be simple arithmetic!

I did 53 or so a few years ago in northeastern PA. It was the same road that I used to ride as a high school kid. When I was 15 I used to fly down the same hills on my Ross 10 speed with no worries. When I tried it in my late 30s on a better bike, with better handling, and better brakes and tires it gave me much to think about. When it was over I thought it was much fun, but during the ride I was a little unnerved. Where I live now in northern VA I hit mid 40s a lot but the hills are short and not frightening at all. The hills I rode in PA were miles long and curving. I once passed some teenagers on mopeds going about 40 on a downhill and scared the crap out them.

I have hit 46.3 MPH on South Park Drive at Tilden Park (Berkeley, CA). I did this on my old ass Schwinn MTB from 96' or so. Since joining the cycling team here, my addiction to biking has yet again become a bad habit. But hopefully I'll be getting a new ride soon and looking out to break that record and do bigger drops. I'll admit it is pretty scary going 40+ MPH if you keep looking at your speedometer. Sometimes I won't even notice I am going that fast until the ride is over and I look at my max speed. I hit 39 MPH during a collegiate race this season and did not think I had even reached speeds like that during the race. The best thing I find to do is ride the hill several times to learn the best line and then bomb down it. Doing it on a low traffic day is key so you can take turns wide without worrying about becoming windshield splatter.

My MAX Speed indicator showed 33.4 mph after a 30 mile hilly ride Saturday. Fastest I've ever gone. Knew I was moving at some points, but was surprised to see it that high.

The fastest I have gone on my bicycle was 55 mph. That was leaving Pine Mountain dropping down into the town of Warm Springs (home of the little White House, FDR's southern retreat). At the same time, friends on a Cannondale tandem passed my by. At the bottom, I caught up with them and they told me they were doing 63 mph when they went by me. I assume that to mean they actually went faster than that at some point.

As for drafting, I was in the front pack of riders that was doing a charity ride out of Savannah, GA once. We had a police car escort that was to take us to the city limits. This must have been the cop's firt time escorting bikes, because once out of the city center, he kept picking up speed. And of course, we kept on his bumper. Before he pulled off we were doing around 45 mph. I don't know what he thought, but he kept looking in the rear view mirror and seeing 6 bikes glued to his rear end. Soon as he dropped off, our speeds plummetted to around 18 mph.

I did 104km/h, and had to lean through a corner at the bottom of the hill doing about 85km/h. It was a sweeper, so not too bad. On my Avanti Aggressor with road slicks on. I was scared heh

After two weeks on my road bike, I've already had it up to 41 mph. And that was with feathering the brakes to avoid traffic. I imagine if I was pedaling and laying off the brakes I might have hit almost 50 mph or higher; it was a very steep hill.

I also might have suffered a coronary.

60 mph in a race after I got dropped due to a defect (dropped chain)

Don't think that I could do that anymore though...my imagination is too beefed up to contemplate something like that!

happy trails,
Tom

Today i'm going to the lbs. Theres a crzy hill there. The lbs is at the bottom, they may have planned it that way? Getting there is the trickiest part. There is a series of 8 really big hills in a row, however, each hill gives me some momentum for the next hill.

Those with Mountain bikes don't you run out of gear? My legs are spinning like I'm in first gear at 65km/h. I could go faster but that's in gear 27 and like I said I'm spinning like you wouldn't believe.

I need a road bike.
