I just picked up my new open pro's. Had them built at my LBS with black rims, black spokes (DT14/15), and black 105 hubs (32/32). The rims are really cool, they put this hologram like decal on there that I hadn't seen before. This is my first custom wheel set, and I couldn't be happier. Looked at buying online, but I couldn't get the all black that I wanted, I would have had the LBS mount them and all that, and for just a few more dollars more I know who built them and can deal locally. Took them for a brief ride, and there aren't enough O's in smooooth to describe how they ride.

Why 105 hubs on a custom wheelset?

Ultegra does not come in Black, the 105s are about a third less$$, and they only weigh a couple of more grams (The front is 1 gram heavier)

Cool! I'm making (with some serious support from the mechanics at the bike shop I work at) my first custom set of wheels. I'm using open pros and xt hubs (its a weird cross bike) and I'm going all black too. I'm thrilled to hear you like them. There was some snooty negative comments about open pros on another thread, but they sound perfect for tough city riding. Have fun with them!

open pro's are bomb proof. love mine (ultegra hubs)

My wheels are mid-90s vintage Mavic Reflex CDs, predecessor to Open4s.
LBS built them for me. 32 DT spokes, 14/15DB in 3x. Phil Wood hubs. Had them checked after the first 300-400 miles. Nothing since. They are ABSOLUTELY BULLETPROOF and spin as true today as when they were built. My next set will be Open4s from the same builder at LBS. Why mess with success? Enjoy your wheels lsd87! |
"Interesting. The anodizing/paint must weigh more than a gram..."
Ultegras are clear anodised/coated, try to polish one. |
somewhere i heard that black spokes are actually a bit weaker becuase of the anodizing process, or maybe it was that they are stronger. I forget, can somebody clear this up?
