I've been looking for a bike helmet for a while, but they're all too small. My melon measures 62cm, but it's wider than usual, and even the largest Specialized, Giro, and Bell helmets don't fit. The largest Bell I tried yesterday came the closest--it's supposed to fit 64cm. It went on rather than riding like a beanie, but it was way too tight at the temples.

I've asked other places online, and was recommended Lazer and Nutcase. The Nutcase helmets sound most promising, but there's no dealer very near to me. I'd appreciate more advice from cyclists with full-sized upper appendages. It's frustrating because I decline to do risky cycling (ie, bad weather, slippery conditions) without a helmet, and I can't find one that I can use. I want to get out there in the ice and snow, but I need skull protection.

I wear a 63 in most hats (7-7/8 or 8), and I'm helmet shopping now for the first time in a few years. I happened to be in REI the other day and tried on everything they had, and there was one I could have worn and one that really fit. I was in a hurry and didn't buy, and now I can't remember what they were, but most REI stores carry the same stuff, so if there's one nearby....

Thanks. That looks like a good suggestion. They have "X-Large 63-67 cm" helmets, and there's a store I can get to. $160 though.

I'm in Canada, so there's no REI. Probably that largest Bell I tried would fit you, but my skull is uncommonly wide.

Thanks. That helps, too. There's a MEC an hour away by bus -- slightly painful but doable. The Nutcase helmets are pretty reasonably priced.

I've got a pretty big head so I feel your pain, but I'm at least still within the range where Bell works. The biggest helmet I've ever seen was an old Wal-Mart one -- it was the only size they had, and it was a freaking salad bowl. I don't know if their helmets are still that huge, but it might be an option. Otherwise, I found this website that offers options -- but it's from 2006 or so: https://www.helmets.org/bighead.htm

Good suggestions. The Garneau could be the easiest for me to get, since apparently my wheelbuilder is a dealer for those.

Just to follow up, I finally found a home for my dome: a Giro Savant Road XL (61-65cm).

I hope this helps other riders with amply-endowed craniums.
