Have Republic Bikes imporved?

SO while hunting around for something "classic" looking that isn't in the 1kUSD+ range, I stumbled across Republic Bikes.

Summary: Nifty bike company that lets you pick component colours from a few pre-selects. Some of their choices are somewhat bewildering, allowing a colour for one component but not another, but that's not the end of the world.

So I did some research and found a thread on here that dates to 2009. At that time, they were using some cheap components and "high tensile strength steel" (hi-ten) frames. I don't know how that compares to other steel frames, but according to most that means they rust if you scratch the paint. Also, that it's "heavy".

Looking around a little more, I've found a blog post from last year that seems to indicate they improved. They appear to use chromalloy frames now, which I have been told is an improvement.

So, does anyone else here have one of their bikes? Have they improved truly since 2009? Where are they still weak? As is they were in 09, it seemed like a worse investment for 500USD than what I currently have, which is a 250USD Schwinn.

How about now?

From the site:
Total assembled weight: 26 lbs - 28 lbs

This plus the fact that just say,"Fully tig welded steel",and the bike is only $399 suggest that they're still using hi-ten. Also note that they aren't specific about the other components. Not saying they're pure crap, just that they're low end bikes at a cheap price.

What are you looking for? If you're looking for a cheap beater or loaner, then they're fine. If you're looking for something quality, you'll need to look somewhere else. BikesDirect has some decent bikes for reasonable,as long as you know how to wrench your own.
