non-reactive water bottles
 

I hate that nasty plastic taste in after leaving water in my bottle over night, or in the heat.
I asked around at the various bike shops in the area for an alternative, but no one knew what I was talking about.
I also heard that these bottles diffuse cancer-causing thingies into the water (which causes the nasty taste).
Anyone heard about water bottles that don't taste like cancer?

I've had two Polar water bottles since 2003. Never noticed any unusual taste in the water or Powerade.

Ive never had any of the plastic taste in any of my specialized water bottles. the cheap xmart ones were terrible. I use a hydration pack more now, but still never noticed the bad taste in the good bottles. As for the cancer, it seems everything causes it anymore.

I know what you are talking about, some bottles do this, some don't. If you have left the water in over night you should wash the bottle any way. When it is dry that tase/smell goes away. Don't use a bottle that has beem left overnight if you can help it.
The cancer thing you mention was from the news. It is about washing and reusing the bottled water bottles that come from the store with water in them. They are not made to be re used. It was not about bottles made to be reusable bike bottles.

If you have the taste problem a lot, try buying some better quality bottles at a bike shop.

Please be careful of nalgene type bottles. There has been reports of strange chemical reactions in the colored ones, esp.

I have been using the same couple of Nalgene bottles that I linked above for a couple years. They last. I don't know what your pals drink, but I have had numerous beverages in them with no result at all. They are, IMHO, the best cycling water bottle made.

I totally agree I have a pair. The white ones are excellent. The cover is handy too.

Yeah, I was shocked when I went water bottle shopping and sniffed the bottles at the stores after
opening the cap. HOrrid plastic odor on ALL I found even absurdly expensive ones. Well, all of them are overpriced for what one gets, IMO.

Anyway I came to the conclusion that I'd be an idiot, knowing what I know about plastics, to consider
using something that gassy as a potable water container. I ended up convincing myself I would be
wise to just use the plastic water bottles one can buy at any grocery/convience store. THose bottles are
made by companies that have to use 'safe' plastics. Safer by far then the crap bike shops and bike parts
vendors offer us. (least the ones I ran into so far)

I have two on my bike. A 16 ounce and 20 ounce. THe 20 ouncer is fitted with a adustable strap water
jug bracket I found at Wal-mart.

Yeah, I'm sure SOMEONE out there makes water bottles that are not gassy, smelly piles of crap but I figured why the hell should I pay crazy prices for something I can get for less than a buck at the local store and use over n over....

...never heard of these nalgene water bottles. What's about access to their info/getting them? I'd been using Campy water bottles. whatever I'd use ---- when the day ends, i preferrably dump the leftover. I consume Gatorade only. Never use it for over 2 days. Very rarely on a 2nd day. And when I consume it all in one day; always wash it out, only with biodegradeable dishwashing soap.

Pretty much everything mankind has made will kill you in some way. Just take a gander at all the additives in your food. Id say any container you use will potentially leech something into your food. I guess we need to evolve and get some extra storage inside our bodies like camels!

Nalgene water bottles are available at REI and also at walmart( also known in some circles as the great satan, I am suprised no one has crashed a Tandem loaded with fuel into one as an attack) although they are bigger than a cage.I have gotten a funny taste off of my hydration pack w/plain water.Another alternative is aluminum bottles with a plastic lining but they cannot be frozen only chilled.

the Nalgene bottles I linked to are not made of Lexan! They are made from LDPE. I used Lexan bottles for over a decade.
This sounds like one of those internet scare stories. I went looking for a comment to that from a scientist. Sure enough..

I'm researching since february 2003 in the toxicology of the plastic material told above (#7) or nalgene plastic. It appeared to be that the results are unclear. When using a strong cleaning material to it, it might leach but normal dishwasher doesn't affect it in the same level. The mice case it's just a stupid example, 'cause i'm sure that scientific used hard chemicals to wash the cage and bottles.
So my suggestion,... stop smoking and keep drinking from your nalgenes!"

The original bottle scare was about washing non reusable bottles that bottled water is sold in. They are not made to be reused. This was actually on the National TV news some time ago.

I buy bottled water and then keep reusing the bottles. They don't have that plastic taste but the water becomes stale if you store the water for a few days.

LDPE is the same material used in the common Specialized bottle and probably 99% of other brands of bottle. Look on the bottom of your water bottle and you'll likely see it there.

this is better. I have never seen a cycling water bottle have so little smell, or last this long.
