Picking your tires.
 

Anyone else do this?
I just spent the last hour watching the daytona 500 (ok don't make fun of me!) and picking all the glass out of my tires. There must've been at least 200 chunks in there.

How do you get that much glass in your tires?

Riding through the city and being way too overconfident with my armadillo's.

- - Yes, for my Armadillos I have used a dental tool and a pair of sharp stainless tweezers to extract glass specks. A Petzl forehead light makes those menacing shards glint in the tire cuts.

Even though I make every effort to "not ride through sh*t", those glass particles are still out there. The higher pressure tires seem to resist glass intrusions better.

never did it; what's the highlite of this?? are you trying to say that it was driveable for some time?? Are yu deciding whether to keep it??? i'd just throw it away, and get another tire.

Anyway, tires accumulate glass. Some people like to pick it, some don't.
I'm just paranoid that all that glass would eventually wear it's way into my tire, I ride through a lot of broken areas.

I pick the glass out after every ride. Takes 5 minutes top. And it save me from watching daytona. man you must be dizzy from watching those cars going around and around on a that oval. I'm getting nausea just thinking about it. :D

I used to do it when I had softer tires. My Contis never got a piece of glass anywhere near them.

Man I miss those tires :( 80 PSI and for the most part they just crunched anything I rolled over. I never flatted on 'em, never had to think about 'em, and never saw anything even remotely close to a pin prick in 'em.

Nah, I saw like 3 huge crashes, it was worth it.

For me a well set up pass going around a hair pin or through a set of S curves in a open wheeler thats auto racing. NASCAR I find is just a bunch of bill boards going around and around bumping into each other.

Too much dominance from team red in F1 but I do enjoy watching that and cart along with le mans and rally's. Everyonce in a while I'll watch irl, both go in circles but for some reason it's not as exciting as nascar.

Agree F1 has been boring the last few seasons. I don't the think the Ferari will be a flopso hopefully the other teams will put out better cars this season. Schui always cracks under pressure so as long as someone can keep up with him it should be intersting.

I could open a recycling center with all the glass I've picked out of my Armadillos.

Though I've never experienced it myself, is there any actual risk in letting chunks of glass stay in there?
My theory's always been it'll eventually cut it's way into the tire but I've never had that happen before.

If I don't notice a shard in the tire while riding/dismounting...I pick 'em!

I didn't use to pick out glass. Then in one exasperating week I had three flats. Each time, I found a shard of glass that had wedged into the tire. Now I pick. I know the time I spend inspecting and picking my tires adds up to more than what I'd spend fixing the occasional flat, but at least I can do it in the warmth of my home, when I'm not already late for work.

I never sat down and did that all at once. But I did over the years get a lot of glass in a pair of armadillos. I had plenty of cuts right down to the cord. They just kept right on going. I had a couple of thousand miles on them they were going strong and I gave them away, and they still are going strong.

The ones I had were very bumpy, there were the old ones that had Kevlar bead to bead. I just wanted something more comfortable. Great tires IMO. !! Must be one of the strongest road tires. I finally have kevlar belted tires on almost all my bikes, but none are as resistant to flats as the Armadillo's were. Which ones do you have?

Sorry to go off topic even more, but car racing, I always get excited about but it always bores me to watch it, no matter what it is... F1, NASCAR, ALMS. I hope the new F1 rules will bring it closer to racing and away from the parade it currently is. I don't have any "armadillos" (don't know what they are, but guessing some sort of road tire?)

Its amazing how much glass there is. Where the hell does it all come from?
