bad eyesight sunglass-solutions
 

For those of us who have less than 20/20, I was wondering what you all do for sun protection. I already know I can't deal with contacts, but if you want to list any pros or cons of your preferred method it might help me make a decision.

I wear graduated specs with a helmet visor to bloc the sun. I'll only put clip ons on if the sun is directly in my eyes. I use croakies or rubber bands to keep glasses snug to face to control distortion & keep glasses moving down my nose. I find peering through the tops of them tiring which makes riding on the drops difficult. Oh for the days of 2015 vision.

I'm debating of a discussion with my optometrist to see if I can get a larger graduated lens with a larger area at the top of the lens, maybe as a bifocal so I can read the speedo. I don't need much more height, maybe a few mm of focus area (keeping the glasses pinned against my head really helps).

I wear big ol' over-glasses that cover my glasses, and half my face. I love them because they keep the sun, wind, and hard, painful things like bugs and dust out of the eyes. I've seen wasps fly directly into the lens of these puppies at 25 mph, bounce off and fly merrily along their way. Probably would have gotten stung in (or at least too close to) the eye if not for these big over-glasses. Looks sorta dorky but I don't care.

I won't leave home without them any more, I love them that much. Cheap, too, so I don't have to worry about them getting lost or broken.

Get flip lenses like Baseball players wear. the prescription lens is shaped like a normal pair of glasses with the sunglass part that flips down. You can get them in a pretty aero design and sometimes with inter changeable lenses.

Good quality prescription wraparound sunglasses can be had for reasonable prices if you look around. Interchangable and double-lens system don't make any sense to me when Transitions and other top quality photosensitive lenses work so well.

Contacts won't work for me, either. Neither will Transistions.

I used to have a pair of polarized OTG that I wore, but a) wasn't the most comfortable while wearing the helmet and b) I seemed to have misplaced them :(. Just recently got some new glasses that came with a matched pair of magnetic clip ons and will be giving that a try. And I typically always wear a ball cap to block the sun. Maybe I'll hint that a Walz cap would be a nice Father's Day gift...

I've had Bollé Parole sunglasses with their prescription insert for about 20 years. They work fine... it's my eyeballs that keep changing. Nashbar used to sell them, but no longer. These people are local to me:

my find was stick on bifocal lenses, they go in safety glasses or sunglasses.. so I can see near.

I've had mine for years. After reading the reviews on amazon apparently the quality has gone down for this brand since I purchased mine. They have similar things at pretty much every general retail shop around here -- truckstops, walmart, drugstores, etc.

I successfully wear contacts, I guess that's important to point out to others as you often hear from folks who can't. I have pretty thick glasses, so having contacts allowed me to wear any shade, all over the place, from driving to kayaking and of course, biking. Before contacts, I wore large shades over my glasses, which was hard as I enjoy the John Denver look in glasses. Safety supply stores is the best place to find them cheap and you can get them in all sorts of colors. I enjoy yellow, orange, and of course tinted. On the water and in snowy winter, I actually used oxy-acetylene welding shades, super dark, everything looks dark green, but very dim and enjoyable on those days where it is just too freaking bright outside.

Went under the zapper as a birthday present to myself 15 months ago and haven't looked back since. Be sure to go to a reputable optometrist to get advice about it, and research the place conducting the surgery heavily. Even allowing for that, the girl who went in straight after me had problems for quite a while afterwards; she's ok now though.

But personally, my op went off without a hitch and my eyesight has been perfect. Well worth the $4,000 it cost me, as I'll save at least that in new glasses, contacts, solutions etc etc over the coming years (I was a contacts + regular shades guy before, but couldn't stand prolonged contact wear).

I too need a fairly strong presciption. After destroying one pair of extremely expensive prescription lens' in a bike crash a few years ago I discovered these folks. They have different styles and a sizing process on their web site that allows finding the best fit over your existing eyeglasses. They are extremely good quality, which is reflected in their price. But that is still nearly an order of magnitude less then similiar prescription lens' (at least for me).

I've gotten my last two pairs of glasses from an online retailer; the quality is there for me, and the price is right.

After looking at this thread, I went there to check my options -- I can order a pair of glasses with either 10%, 50%, or 80% tint, in a variety of colors, AND can add a mirror finish to it, for under $60!

I voted contacts + regular sunglasses because that's what I do. My contacts are starting to bother me as I age - my glasses are bifocals AND transition but they don't block anywhere near as much sunlight (either through the glass or around the frame) so I don't really care for those.

I'd get prescription sunglasses next but the hazard there is you can't really take them off when you get where you're going, if you're going anywhere.

Oakley and Rudy both have prescription inserts I believe too, if you'd prefer that route.

How lucky are we to have all these options?

One thing I refuse to do is get zapped. I know from experience I can't do the near in one eye, far in the other eye so... I'm skipping it, as wonderful as it sounds.

Use a helmet with a visor.

My prescription lenses are transition lenses, I also use clip on sunglasses on really bright days.
I also have my prescription lenses tinted yellow. So, I actually wear yellow tinted transition lenses. They go to brown in the sunlight (I think it has something to do with the UV radiation).

I just wear my regular glasses (no poll option). Might get transitions next time.

I had the magnetic sunglasses, but they quickly got swept away in the ocean when my son knocked them off my face while I was carrying him. I passed on the $80 replacement option.

I use SolarShield fit-over glasses, and when it's cloudy, fit-over safety glasses for protection from the wind and insects. The last time I considered prescription sports glasses, I had a hard time finding a company that would make them in -6.75 diopters.

For those who chose the fit over/OTG option, I have a question. What do you do with them when not using them?

My preference is contact lenses and Oakley M-Frames, which I've recently combined with a Giro Air Attack with shield. The clear shield saves carrying multiple lenses for the Oakleys since I can just remove them and wear them backwards around my neck in the evening.

If I was starting from scratch and couldn't wear contacts - I'd just go with the Giro, regular glasses and two shields (tinted / non-tinted) for the Giro. Initially looks expensive for a helmet but given the prices of most of the alternatives - its a bargin.

$375 for a pair of rudy project prescription sunglasses?!?! someone run me over..I can live without the sunglasses swag.

On the other hand - thats also pretty much what a standard pair of perscription glasses costs in Canada with polycarbonate lenses and anti scratch coating. :(
