Type, condition, age, manufacturer, desirability, rarity, if someone we know once owned it and what someone is willing to pay for it. Some bikes weren't worth much new and aren't worth much used.

Like everything else, it's worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. A few years ago I paid WAY too much for a 1930s Schwinn, and was happy to do it: it had been my dad's when he was a kid and got left behind when his family moved from San Francisco. By absolute coincidence, I stumbled on it in a bike shop in Portland (his name was scratched on the handlebars). Like a dumbass, I called him from the shop to verify and the owner heard me. The $50 tag disappeared while I was on the phone, miraculously replaced by a $150 one.

value to the purchaser and every market (city/state) is different.

I once drove 4 hrs round trip for a $20 bike. he was asking $25 but I negotiated him down ... on that occasion that's what that bike was worth to this person.

a good way to find out what you should charge would be to search for the same bike in your area. if there are 10 being sold for $200-$300 then it wouldn't make sense to sell yours for $50 or $500.

Two things.

1) What someone is willing to buy it for.
2) What someone is willing to sell it for.

I find the title ambiguous. I first read it as the cost to operate a bicycle, as in total cost per mile for example. Others seem to be interpreting as the price for purchasing/selling a bike. Which is it?

If the seller don't know what he's selling you can have real good deals.
3 years ago I bought a 1984 Bianchi in very good shape with a saddle bag, a vintage disc Wheel, vintage look pedals, a spare handle bar and a spare stem for 80$. One of my coworker wanted to get ride of the ''Junk'' in the basement of the house he had just bought...

But there's a gazillion factors that can go into determining "supply" and "demand". And the factors vary from person to person.

The two things that come to mind is how knowledgeable the seller is, and what the buyer is willing to pay.

A lady in the bent club in Omaha bought a really good condition Easy Racer with a fairing for $200 at a garage sale. On the other hand I sold my first bent a 3 year old Rans Tailwind for only $200 less than I paid for it new.

About the best advice there is, is to be a knowlegeable buyer.

And they all fall under either "supply" or "demand"
