Bugs
I took a short night ride recently and it was made short due to the crazy amount of bugs in the air which were all colliding and sticking to me. Bugs are only a summer problem here when riding, but I know in many other places it can be a worse and year round issue. What does everyone do to deal with them? Clear riding glasses for night? Face mask of any kind? Good quality windbreaker?

Mouth shut, breath through nose, or ride where they aren't.

Best to swallow quickly before you feel them crawling in your mouth, unless you're into that sort of thing.

For night riding I use clear safety glasses from Home Depot. Late afternoon / early evening and early mornings I like the yellow tinted safety glasses for the bright contrast. During the sunny time of the day I like my Ray Ban RB3026 Aviators. All of these glasses are also good for riding in the rain to keep my eyes clear. For my body I just let the bugs hit me. I do not wear anything special |
Breath in thru your nose, out thru your mouth....repeat constantly.
You can usually figure out where the really buggy areas are at a certain time of day and plan for them. I ride alot before sunrise and I usually see them in my light first and close my mouth. I forget sometimes. The smaller ones are easier to swallow. For some reason, I hate to have them stuck in my hair so I usually wear a cool max skull cap under my helmet. |
sit on couch, watch tv, drink beer...only thing to do at night...

I cannot imagine it being any more "buggy" than here in Florida in the summer. Mouth closed is a must, some of our bugs down here leave an awful aftertaste. :D

I stop short so my friend riding just behind crashes into me.

I don't have a gnat problem where I live but every once in a while I get GIANT months and beatles to smash into my face as I'm riding. They actually hurt a bit depending on the bug and my speed. But i still ride open mouthed breathing heavy, no eyewear so .. when I choke on a cicadea this is me telling myself I told you so.
