Priorities and budgeting.
Many moons ago I was working on a large out of town construction crew. There was a really nice backpacking store in town that was going out of business and marking things down. Every pay day I would go an buy something that had been marked down. The other guys on the crew thought I was nuts for paying $50 for a back packing stove or other gadget. They would routinely go to the topless bars and blow a $100 a week. I still have most of my backpacking stuff... what do they have to show for the money they spent?

It's a matter of deciding that you're going have a bike and maintain it at some level of functioning. Once you decide, you just fit it in. On paper, a lot of people can't afford to have children. After the kids are here, they decide; We'll work it in somehow. And they do. Mostly by improving their budgeting. bk

So a friend of mine asked yesterday how I can possibly afford all my expensive cycling equipment. We had just finished eating and we were standing outside next to his almost new $25,000 Honda. I said it's all about priorities. Then I walked over to my 20 year old Honda Civic, which I picked up 6 years ago for $2000 cash. I've had to do a few minor repairs in that time, and I do them myself when I can, with parts from the local salvage yard if they're significantly cheaper than new parts.
If I were to add up the cost of all my cycling equipment, I doubt it would exceed $6000. So car plus cycling gear -> $2000 + $6000 = $8000. That's less than a third of the price of that $25,000 new car.
I tell them it's all about "priorities". I don't think they get it, though.

I have 13 bikes, and I am thrilled with them, and I am not anywhere near those 5 figures.. First, I am into C&V whereas, I can pick up a bike for a couple hundred or less, and have it turned into a prize. Ditto for cars. I recall about 10 years ago, I am a sports car freak, I had 4 Madza RX7s, and 2 motorcycles, and my total cost wasn't over $10K.. I was driving a different vehicle everyday, and having fun to the max.. So, it is matter of your taste and style, that will determine the cost..
Just my two cents..

Another desert favorite is astroturf. Just think, your yard could double as a putting green! Charge your golf loving neighbors to come over and practice...means more money for cycling.

Reminds me of talking with co-workers who said a buddy of mine was nuts for spending $2500 on a really good mountain bike. There was total silence when I pointed out that the annual cost of their pack a day smoking habit was about $4300 or so.

Even riding custom titanium with Di2, I feel like I'm getting off easy compared to a lot of people around me.
I see expensive golf clubs, fancy cars, private yachts, jewelery fit for a queen, vacation homes, private schools, and the list goes on.
