What's up with that?
So, I'm headed out of town on my bike for a nice relaxing ride. Come to a red light at an intersection. Two lanes, the left one for left turn only, the right lane for straight and right turns. I'm going straight, so I move to the left side of the right lane so as not to block any vehicles wanting to turn right on red, as is legal here. A car pulls up beside me to turn right -- no worries, lots of room, I'm not blocking him so he won't need to wait for the light to change in order to make his turn. I glance down at the driver and he's flipping me the bird! :wtf: Legally, I could have claimed the whole lane and forced him to wait for me to clear the intersection, but I was trying to be a Good Citizen by letting him turn right on red.
People, I tells ya... :notamused: |
They're ignorant of the law and how to appropriately share the road with cyclists. We need more education and awareness programs for motorists and cyclists...not a few more miles of MUPs or sharrows.

I had a similar thing happen, I was positioned just like you were . . . but when the light turned green the guy in the right turn lane went straight ahead, then cut over (right in front of me) full throttle (apparently) so he could beat the two cars who were legally in the go-straight lanes, i.e. he wanted to go straight too but wasn't willing to wait behind those cars; and decided to race them instead.
I'm sure any consideration for me on a bicycle . . . well, I just wasn't a consideration at all. People, I tells ya . . . :notamused: |
The proper thing would have been to ignore him completely, as he is a dick.
The tempting thing would be to drag him out of the car and beat the snot out of him. But I would not have done that, as I haven't gotten into a fight since high school. Anyway, bird flippage confers no significant ill effects upon the recipient. |
Shake your head and laugh at him next time.
|
Flick a booger on his car.
|
A well-timed yawn could speak volumes.

Smile and Wave! :)

I had something similar happen, I rode up to an intersection, light turns green to go straight so I head across. This old lady starts to turn right into me as I'm crossing so I stop (nowhere to go) to assess the situation and she stops mid turn. We both sit there blocking traffic and I'm like WTF it's my turn punk. I finally give up on motorists and just sit around until there are no cars. In less than a month we have had two bicyclists involved in hit and runs. Both motorists were caught, one a drugged up teen the other a near death senior citizen.
