Amsterdam for Spring Break!!!

Just thought I'd tell everyone I'm leaving saturday and coming back saturday for Amsterdam with my girlfriend. I just can't wait to see all the bikes and just cruise around a town where rednecks won't yell at me for being on a bike. Just remember next week while you are at work, I'll be hanging out in museums and parks and biking around Amsterdam with my girlfriend. This is my first time to Europe. I'll tell everyone how it goes. Hope it is as cool as I think it will be. Peace out Napoleon.

- - Can't wait to hear about your cycling experiences and observations in Amsterdam. Please note their compliance of traffic lights and stop signs, designs of bike lanes, bike racks and other cycling amenities. Gives us a good long reort, and thanks for the advance notice.

Enjoy the coffee houses ;)

LOL Just got back from Denmark. Make sure you take your cold/wet gear as Europe just got pounded by snow. Still should be a good time though.

Have a hot dog for me , and herring have some herring.

Kestrelman 03-04-05 09:10 AM

Yuk! The herring over there is is disgusting! But the Dutch line up for it for breakfast. A nice place to sit back and have a beer is the Spau - much less crowded than the Leidseplein. If you want to have a some fun, though, take a day ride to Harleem or Zaandfort. A nice ride. Also, ride in the Vondel park and stop at the Film Musuem for a beer. BTW - are you bringing your bike? If so, and it's at all in good shape, don't bother bringing a lock - it'll be gone in 10 minutes. Just never let it out of your sight.

Have some poffertjes for breakfast one day.
Have some bitterbollen.
Try the raw herring, if for nothing else than to gain an understanding of how warped these people can be ;-)
Check out the Van Gogh museum. It's a big attraction, but worth it as I think his work is truly inspiring.
Rent some bikes and putz around all day everywhere. Make good use of the bell, just like everyone else.
Enjoy.

Careful with the coffehouses do not indulge too much they serve things other than coffee and it stays in your sysyem for a while . It could cause you to flunk a test.

The trip was amazing. I didn't get to ride because my girlfriend would die if she tried to ride in european trafic. The bikes were amazing, now that I'm back I don't feel like I need to prove that it's ok that I'm biking to the motorists. Now I just cruise.

We walked all over the city it was really cool. So much of the city was so surreal. The red light district, the coffee houses, it was cheaper to get a bear with lunch than a water. It was so amazing to see people who in the states would be driving their suburban assault vehicles because they have 2 kids and work. I saw so many bikes with up to 3 kid seats with kids in them happy as hell. Biking wasn't a big deal at all over there, it was pretty cool.

Something that surprised me was how close the cars got to the bikes, but the thing is that the drivers were obviously paying attention. The whole system worked so well it was awsome. It gave me hope for America. I realized that the general public needs bikes like they have over there. About 200 euro gets you an awsome (but very heavy) commuter with gyro lights and everything. In america all the normal person gets is a crappy full suspension (suposidly) from walmart that rides like hell and is extremely inefficient and you can't carry crap on it.

A good place to start would be to sell those type of bikes in college towns cause I'm sure lots of college kids would love super cheap dependable bikes. Oh yeah, and I feel like a moron so how anal I am about maintenance on my bike after seeing how they will ride some beat up skweaky bikes.

In short, I think I could live there if I knew the language (although everyone knew english). Hey, there is a university and I want to be a professor, not to large of a dream.
