Custom license plates for bicycles.
 

A very short Google search lead me to this:

Plates that range from the size of the ones that came out of cereal boxes to motorcycle/ATV and car-sized ones. They're plastic or aluminum (you choose) and they even have state plates.

So far, license plates remain a custom accessory rather than a required part on bicycles, but do you think motorists would react any differently if they saw a bicycle sporting a (non-registered) car-sized plate? Even though the idea to make them mandatory has always been dropped or rejected. But what if for the fun of it? Which is what these plates are for?

I wonder if they are even reflective, I couldn't tell looking at the site. I would put one on my bike just to see the reactions.

No. Registration for road taxes is a red herring, a rationalization for aggressive driving. There would be no change in motorist behavior.

I don't think these plates can be registered (for bicycles anyway). They are mostly eye candy.

In the US it might get police attention however. AFAIK it is illegal to affix a government-issued vehicle license plate to any vehicle other than the one it is registered to.

This idea (of making custom plates) was bounced around for a while on rat rod bikes forum.
There are many places that can print miniature plates, but they can't make them in the US-style: embossed metal and with the reflective paint.
A lot of people said they'd LOVE to be able to get mini bike plates that were identical to normal (US) car plates, but the equipment to do that type of stamping is not a minor expense.
Nobody was much interested in any computer-printed style.

Plastic or aluminum, it does not say anywhere whether they are reflective. (I'm assuming they are not.)

I had one with my name on it was a kid. My mom bought it in a gift shop at Knott's Berry Farm.

I wonder if "NOGAS4ME" is already taken for Washington State. :P

But since these aren't registered or government issued, it probably wouldn't matter if someone else had it. <.<

Just because they haven't been made mandatory yet doesn't mean that they won't in the future- there is proposed bill in GA that is getting quite a bit of buzz for something everyone says will fail.. The successful passing of the bill doesn't sound very promising. The NJ one never came close to passing if I recall. Toronto had one briefly, but they got rid of it.

Plastic non-reflective, circa 1988 Maine (red lobster) plate version, stick on letters. Says "NYAB" , stands for Not Your Average Bicycle.
My ex-supervisor asked me once, If I had to have it, so that I could legally ride on the road.
I would love to get a reflective metal version.

Reflective would make more sense, regardless if they were required or if motorists gave a hoot.

What if you asked a vehicle registration office for a vanity plate?

I think they're ugly, and wouldn't want to make room on my bikes for them.

I've already pictured how I'd fit one on mine. A metal coat hanger or two, and possibly a couple cable ties, and I'd be good to go.

if you use a router and make the reverse of what you want to see

you can bang one out by banging on the backside to push the metal into the groove you cut in the pattern.

I don't know how they do things in "the make-work state", but here in Iowa, the plates aren't embossed anymore.
