Greenways

My wife and I like greenways. We travel all over the mid-south to ride. It would be cool to exchange info and photos with others who ride greenways but I don't see a place for that here. Am I missing something? Are we the only greenway enthusiasts?

I like to ride on the Hudson River Greenway here in New York City.
But sometimes it's packed when the weather is warm and you have
to watch out for little kids zig zagging, dogs off leash zig zagging,
roller bladers zig zagging, squirrels zig zagging; well you get the point.

Question for you Willa, if I may....what is the difference between a greenway and a regular trail? There's a trail in my area called the Burnham Greenway. I've ridden it a couple of times, and to me it looks just like a regular trail.

Thanks.

Good question ... are greenways the same as cycleways, MUPs, trails, and bicycle routes? If so, I think many of us ride them some of the time and ride roads some of the time ... all a part of regular riding.

I'm not sure what differentiates greenways from regular trails. The best greenways are paved and scenic. We don't much care for the ones that just run alongside a highway.

I'd never heard the term "greenway" before I read this thread. After looking up the definition, it turns out I have ridden on one. Houston has a couple of them, but we don't call them that.

The Trinity River through Fort Worth has an extensive trail system (the Trinity Trails). Link to pdf map. If you find yourself here without a bicycle, you can check out a Fort Worth Bike Sharing bicycle.

I just remembered, I also rode on the Silver Comet Trail
when I visited Georgia. It's also nice and scenic.

And, I got to add the San Gabriel River Bikeway in southern California:

I have to find out the name of the network of paths we took in the
Bronx a while ago:

Here's a video of my commute; the "greenway" section starts about 1:45 in.

Our greenways connects to asphatways, concreteways, hookerways, assaultways and eventually ends in my driveway.

I think it's just a different name for the same thing in different places. Some places say "soda" and some say "pop." I'd never heard of a greenway until I went back home to Idaho a few years ago and saw a sign for one. Oh, a bike path.

Actually out there it kind of makes sense since the one in Boise goes along the river. Most places that aren't right near the water or are actively irrigated are going to be brown out there, unlike in the East where everything is more or less green. So a bike path that goes through one of the rare green spots might as well be named for it.

Rowan and I have ridden portions of all of these trails/routes ...

The Velodyssey Route along the west coast of France: https://www.velodyssey.com/

The North Sea Route: https://www.northsea-cycle.com/

The Rhine Cycle Route: https://www.rhinecycleroute.eu/

The Rhone Cycle Route: https://www.veloland.ch/en/routes/route-01.html

The Marne and Mosel also have cycle routes. And Holland and Belgium are covered in them ... you could spend months riding them all.

The Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail (The Great Victorian Rail Trail): https://www.victorianrailtrails.com.au/ ... this one ran through the area where we lived

Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail: https://www.murraytomountains.com.au/ ... this was our favourite of the rail trails we tried in Victoria

And we've ridden a few of these ...

Other Australian Rail Trails: https://www.railtrails.org.au/

And we've just recently found out about this one ... interesting ... tempting.
The enormous cycling trail in South Korea: https://www.riverguide.go.kr/eng/index.do

We've just moved to Tasmania, and although it doesn't have anything like the above trails, we have ridden most of the local cycleways.

We've got tons of them in Colorado and I'd classify them slightly differently from a "bike path" or MUP. Within the Denver area, we have the Platte River Greenway, the Wheatridge Green Belt, Sand Creek, Bear Creek, Cherry Creek, Fountain Creek in Colorado Springs, the Arkansas River Trail, and a whole host of others. What they have in common is a wider park like feel instead of a path that runs between roads. That said, we have a number of Greenways in the mountains around here that are a bit closer to roadways but are still what I would call a greenway. These include, but aren't limited to, the Summit County system, the Vail Pass Bike Path, Glenwood Canyon and the Rio Grande Trail from Aspen to Glenwood (40 miles of downhill bliss if you go that in the right direction).

Our favorite greenways are in Evansville IN and Murfreesboro TN. When I get a chance I'll upload some photos and link them.
