I like riding in a jersey for two reasons- front zipper for ventilation, and pockets. for longer road rides, I get hot and that zipper really helps. I do longer rides in just lycra cycling shorts, so those pockets come in handy. for everyday riding to work, though, I just ride in a moisture-wicking t-shirt. it does the job and I can wear regular shorts on my 7.5 mile commute to work and put everything I need in a pannier on my rear rack.
you don't have to buy jerseys with logos on them. ironically, the non-logoed jerseys cost less. I only have a few and most of them are plain. Pearl Izumi makes great, comfy jerseys in ordinary colors. if you don't want them skin-tight, get one that fits just a little big. I like a little air movement between my skin and my clothing anyways.

I feel like laughing at the irony every time I wear the jersey with our company's logo - we passed them out to employees riding in the Tour de Cure. They do pay my salary and they're kind of pleased to have at least one bicycle commuter so it does feel like getting paid to wear the logo but in an ironical way.

Probably already been coved I think, but pockets. I use the pockets on the back of the cycling jerseys every ride. If you don't, under armor or is fine.
