Even at your now 224 plus the 20 you would still have to use at least 140 psi in the rear, very few tires are rated that high. The very smallest tire you should be using is a 25 and that's marginal!

I'm not going to agree with this either. I weigh about 240, always ride 23's with about 100-110 lbs. pressure and have never had any problem. I don't know what any "chart" says - I've never seen one, but I do think that if this was going to be a problem I would have discovered it by now. I've been riding these since the 1970's. In your defense however, I will admit that when I know I'll be riding on rough, dirty urban city streets I do ride 25's, but this is primarily for more flat protection. Somewhat off topic, but related - I do ride sturdy wheels. Almost all my rear wheels are 36 spoke, 14 ga.

I hear that a lot but I have doubts. Do you have an industry source for that statement or is it just rumor?

If true, there should be a test protocol document somewhere that specifies what kind of rim tires are tested on.

I am also a clyde... Well a pachy.

I've been told the rims can also only handle so much pressure. This was dependent upon pressure, tire width, shape and rim characteristics...
