Bike messenger tips? Location, Bike, Do's and Don'ts?

I am planning on becoming a bicycle messenger the first month of the year. From what I understand, there are many more locations than just NYC (Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angelos, Portland)

My Question is, what would be the a good location to start? I currently live in the Valley of Arizona, we have one bike courier service that opened up a few months ago, the first and only one to ever exist in AZ. I want to get out of this state, I just don't like it here anymore.

Another Question, Bicycle to get the job done. From a bit of research it sounds like a good used Cyclocross bike is a good choice as they are durable. Also steel. Currently I own a Huffy 314 (1976 steel lugged bike with 26 1-3/8 tire size) I wouldn't even ask this question and I'd use my reliable bike, but I don't feel that the current wheels I have are any good for messengering. Mainly because I can only find wheels made from china that I buy on Amazon, unless someone can point me in the direction of a sturdy wheelset, I feel it'd be better for me to just pick up a decent used bike.

Last Topic for this thread: From experience, what are some do's and don'ts for messengering? I'm sure wherever I go and get hired, they will go over this, but there are some things that can only be learned from peers with proper knowledge.

Thank you everyone in advance.
