Safety hats

There seems to be quite a vast range as far as pricing goes. I already don the purple bone dome when I go out but couldn't help but notice a trendier flame patter cut on a hat the other day. Picked it up and looked at the price Aus$265.00. Then picked up the less trendy hat next to it and it was Aus$35.00. I assume the $265.00 hat was brand name, prolly what old mate Armstrong wears in the TDF. I did observe that not one shark fin hat was kept in stock.... prolly due to wake turbulence issues.

So how much have you spent on your lid? and do you believe there's anything more than cosmetic difference. A cursory glance seems to indicate a foam core covered by a shiney plastic exterior.

Well, HD, according to the folks who test these things, they're all supposed to meet minimum safety specs. So, I'd say get one that fits, that you can afford and that you like enough to wear--but not in the shower when you're shaving your legs.

I do believe you're stalking me BB. It's just as well that I don't mind or this could lead to serious consequences. :D

Fer sure, just get one that feels good.I wear a Giro and like it a lot.Mine is custom with a Squidward sticker on it.If anyone here would be fun to stalk it would be you.

I'm just using you. I'm really trying to find a decent shiela.

I spent $60. I like the helmets with better ventilation(i.e. more holes) so I spent a little extra to get more venting.

2manybikes 03-13-05 07:37 PM

Generally speaking the more expensive helmets have more holes in them, or bigger holes. The helmet is lighter and cooler in the heat. Some of them will have different methods to adjust the fit. That is something you need to try, to see if you like it.

Like many bicycle things, you spend more to get less! The more you spend the smaller the difference is too!

My grandpa told me what brand of brain bucket to get, so i got it :) I like it :) I think it was $45

Being used sits okay with me.

What's the exchange rate? $260 australian still sounds like a LOT of money.

BostonFixed 03-13-05 08:22 PM

Always wear protection.

Today that would be about US$205.00 I'm sure it would have to be a big name brand for someone to ask that sort of money for it. Had to admit, it was prolly the nicest hat in the place. Guess I'll stick with the purple dome of silence.

Carve one out of a coconut shell. :)

I don't even think they sell one that expensive around here. Most expensive one I've seen is the giro atmos that lance wears and that's only $189.

I have a $20 Bell Helmet. It seems to work? No test results yet. . .

hopefully you won't have to test it...

HaagenDas 03-13-05 11:04 PM

The more I look at it the more I believe the lid I was looking at the other day was a Giro. Those coconut hats look cool - prolly quite effective too since I've never seen a buggered coconut.. 'cept until I've had a chop at it.

$205US for a helmet. Thats alot of money.

You guys in Aussie land really get gouged for bike stuff eh?

HaagenDas 03-13-05 11:47 PM

Yup. We get hit up for everything. You name it, we pay extra. :( :( :(

Why pay more? Don't know.

The carved coconut and mahogany helmets are impressive.

I never see coconuts hit the ground from 40' tall trees ever broken. :)
