Smokin Deal on Nuvinci N360 on ebay...few question
 

Few questions.

I'm looking to put a Nuvinci on my old cromo bike with v-brakes, and a new build with hydrualic discs.

They have a version of the N360 for disc and for rim brake.

If I buy the disc brake version for the rim brake bike bike, will it still work. I'd imagine only if I purchased the rim brake version for the disc bike it would not, correct?

Now for price. There is a listing for some old stock 2012 model year N360's for about 50% off current retail price. Nuvinci N360 Internal Gear Bicycle Rear Bike Hub 32 or 36 Disc Roller Rim Brake | eBayOnly thing is, i don't know why this guy has a bunch of current model, old stock units floating around. Did they make changes to the newer 2013-14 N360 hubs that make them better...or is the 2012 model the identical product?

I've asked nuvinici themselfs and the ebay seller, but have gotten no reply from either.

You can absolutely use the disc brake version with rim brakes. I'd go that route given the choice as it makes the hub more versatile for future uses.
I believe the N360 is the updated version.

I wonder what changes they made to the new one? Is it worth x2 the price?

This way I can outfit 2 bikes with the nuvinci at the price of one! :)

To be honest, I don't know that much about them. The only exposure I've had was to build one of the old models into a wheel. I didn't do the install and setup in the bike.

wasnt the older version less than a 360% range..

new ones seem OK 180 % up or down .. SA 3 speed are 177%

I remember people complaining that ratio range was not published, and Fallbrook would not answer the question.

I guess one would just have to do a DiY and count the times the wheel went around
at the ends of the overdrive and reduction ratios..

I've been looking into these for a while. From what I've heard, the only thing Nuvinci won't publish is the efficiency numbers. This is because they are lower than a regular IGH, but none the less, they are not published.

The N171 was the previous version, 171% ratio. The new N360 is 360% ratio. I heard back from Nuvinci, and they say the 2012 N360 (still 360% gearing) is the same as the new models, but lacks the ability to convert to the Gates Carbon Drive system.

The N360 is lighter than the N171, by a few pounds, and has a more compact form factor.

The N360 twist shifter also only takes 3/4 a rotation, while the N171 is like 2 and a half rotations. I've tested N360, and I'd say it would be equivalent to an 11 speed geared hub in range, but without the drawbacks of geared hub shifting.
