Civia Fenders (and SKS clips)

I'd like to mount some fenders to my cross check. But, I'm picky.

I'd like a low front fender that fits fat tires near my frame's limit. (probably in composite) It seems that means only one option. Civia fenders.

If I can't get my idea below to work, I guess I will end up with the SKS P45 Longboard. (I wish the P50 went lower).

Thus, I'd like a 50mm fender. Sadly, after some reading here and comparing photos, it seems the PB cascadia and SKS longboard fenders have a lower front flap for the more narrow models (PB road & SKS P45 and under). Both the Cascadia hybrids and P50 longboards have a shorter/higher flap in front.

While I could DIY up an extension, I'd rather avoid that if I could. I wouldn't have to worry about drilling the fenders/flap and protecting/keeping the bolts/nuts.

Then I came across civia fenders. They seem better than both PB and SKS but they don't appear to have safety releases. I'd like those too. I wonder if the SKS clips will work.

Will this work? Are Civia fenders decent?

Thank you! I hope this all made sense.

First,I have a set of Civia Wirth fenders that I had on a bike for awhile(no longer have that bike). They're pretty much on par with Planet Bike, which is to say they are of good quality.

Next the safety releases. Someone will prolly post that their friend's life was saved by a set of these, and that all fenders should have them, but I've never needed them. I've actually used two sets of SKS fenders where I couldn't use the releases on the front because they were in the way. If they were that big of a deal, all fenders would come with them. With all the things I have to worry about in riding my bikes in the DC area, not having safety releases isn't one of them.

BTW,the bikeshare bikes don't even use them:

Great! That helps with the feedback on the quality.

I'm still aiming for safety clips.

Civia's fenders don't come with the safety releases, but they will work with the SKS or Planet Bike units.

Thanks!

Well, that settles it! I'm going to get a pair of their fenders!

Sadly, they don't seem to currently make the Isles fenders.

What are fender safety releases? What's the safety issue. Genuinely curious because I've never seen nor heard of them. The fenders I'm familair with simply bolt on to the threaded fender boss on the dropouts and/or a J-clip substitute.

[edit ] just read the link above so I now know what the clips are. But have people actually experienced a safety issue w/ fenders (as opposed to simply damage or inconvenience).

As a different topic - do people find that the Civia fenders are better/quieter than the Planet Bike fenders? I use some plastic Planet Bike fenders I bought locally several years ago and they work fine and are holding up well, but they rattle quite a bit.

There was a poster a few years back who claimed he did. I've never had any issues.

I'd say they're equal.

Blue Loctite all the bolts. Rattles gone.

Thanks for the idea. I do have blue locktite. I didn't think the bolts were the source of the rattling, more of a deal where the fenders and stays flex and wobble back and forth. But I'll just try to tighten up everything and locktite the bolts.

Not just the bolts that connect the stays to the bike, but also the bits that connect the stays to the fenders. I Loctite everything when I install the fenders.
