Anyone been bullied for Cycling?

I have people yelling stuff at me from cars all the time.
Like "Nice bike fa*" and "BIKE ARE FOR PUS**IES"
But today i went and did laundry and some guy was like "you bike people are all hippy commies and don't contribute to the economy" I asked the man to get away from me and then went into the bathroom to refill my water bottle from the sink.. when i came back out he was like "Oh, You people think you're so better than everyone"

Why do people not like bike riders..
A few days ago some teens where throwing bricks off a bridge just at bike riders..

Probably at some point this guy has had a bad experience with a fa* pu**y commie hippy on a bike and just can't put it behind him.

RPK79 04-23-14 10:06 AM

I blame the LCF forum.

raqball 04-23-14 10:07 AM

I've had things thrown at me from cars as they pass me (I am always in the bike lane) so they are just being jerks..

I have yet to be struck from a launched item..

MRT2 04-23-14 10:12 AM

Actually, no. Where do you live?

caloso 04-23-14 10:14 AM

Perhaps you live in an area with a disproportionate number of jerks.

Cyclosaurus 04-23-14 10:14 AM

Sorry you are experiencing that. Where are you located? Can't say I've had the same treatment.

casio04330 04-23-14 10:16 AM

I live in augusta maine..

I think he was talking about that i don't pay taxes for a car and gas because i have a bike?

What i don't get is how can someone be a commie hippie?

Sounds like he hasn't been punched in the mouth for a real long time...

I've had people pass us and yell like we were impeding them, when there was no other traffic, and they had a whole other lane to move into. I really don't get the hate when there was absolutely no harm done.

That sounds like a concealed carry moment...

For what it's worth, I don't think assault charges are sufficient. Attempted murder seems more appropriate.

I've never had anyone say anything derogatory to me while I've been riding a bicycle, hiking, or motorcycling, etc. Or at least not that I could hear...

However, this apparently is not so uncommon with male bicyclists that wear spandex. And no, I don't have anything against such riders like some people do; I'm just stating what I've heard over the last couple of decades of riding.

While I have only experienced something being thrown at me, once. But it wasn't a brick, it was just a cup. Regardless of the lack of severity in my experience, I still feel for you. Because a brick can kill anyone.

I think motorists' hate cyclists' for three reasons. Entitlement to the road. Also jealousy for lack expense incurred by using a bike. Lastly, The ease with which to get around.

I went spandex(shorts only) because regular shorts were causing my thighs to chafe and making me sore after a long ride. I am more comfortable in spandex shorts.

It helps if you're not wearing spandex!

I am not going to sacrifice wearing spandex for any jerk on the road.

Sometimes it's fun to play with the idiots.

When someone in a truck full of 4 or 5 construction workers shouted, "Nice ass, f**s!" at a bunch of us while on a group ride, I replied "Sorry, I don't swing that way, but it's OK if you do. But I wonder what your buddies are gonna say now that know you think men's asses are nice." About 75-80% of the truck's occupants started laughing their asses off, while the remaining 20-25% looked like they were going to explode.

On a Saturday solo ride, a driver in a work panel truck buzzed me, and when I caught up to him at a red light, he rolled down his window and started the standard, "Get on the sidewalk!" tripe. I replied, "Do you know why you have to work on weekends driving a truck, while I can ride a bike that's worth more than your car? Because you're not only an ignorant idiot that's unaware of the law, you insist in showing off your ignorant idiocy to people you don't even know. If you'd just learn to shut up not as many people would know how stupid you are."

Most of the time I just ignore 'em.

Spandex and its ilk doesn't just make the best cycling clothing, it's a great idiot detector.

See above post for how much fun you can have with idiots.

caloso 04-23-14 01:22 PM

If a driver threatens you, take out your phone and make a big show of taking a picture of the license plate. That usually does the trick.

I believe that these stories played out in your head this way, but I don't believe, for a second, that they actually occurred.

Back in the day... when hippie's roamed north America........ many were actually members of the communist party. It was even considered common (although not as frequent as imagined) that many hippies lived in communes. The sharing of efforts and resources was central to the movement. The concept of a more free life-style... unencumbered from ambitious efforts and labors sounded very attractive to many.

Surprisingly where I am, drivers seem to be courteous and let me cross the streets even when they are the only car around. Some will stop and hold other cars while I need to cross over a lane or such.

I've only had one incident so far where I'm making a left turn at an intersection and a pickup truck crosses over right after i'm making a left heading into the same direction and gives me a look.

When I was a teen any time me and friends saw a spandex guy, one of us would lean out the window yelling "do it for france!" in a ridiculous exaggerated french accent.

What? You were the guy shouting from the truck full of construction workers, or were you the driver who tried to run me off the road?

I thought that a country that import oil lose money. If a country buy 1 million of oil from outside then get back from folks via taxes it's still 1 million that went away.
Best option is to use less oil that what the country is able to produce. That's what bicycles are for

And even in a country like Canada that produce more oil that needed. Using bicycles could help preventing the Dutch disease. A great topic for the P&R forum.
