First solo century of the year!
Rode my first solo century today! Thought the route I had planned was only going to be 70 miles, ended up being a full 100.
Went from home through town to state highway 12. Took highway 12 up to Hawarden, Iowa and back. Pretty flat with some minor rolling hills, not to mention a 15 to 20 mph head wind on the way back, about 45 miles worth. Heres the stats on todays ride: Distance: 100.7 miles. Time: 6:38:39, (Pretty respectable time huh?) I think a century less then 7 hrs is good. avg speed: 15.1 mph Max Speed: 34.7 mph Felt great, stopped along the way to eat at pass through town and in Hawarden, the half way point. Gatorade and rice krispie bars are pretty good fuel, BTW. Feel great now, not a bit stressed out or fatigued, though my legs are tired. I also did something else unexpected this holiday weekend too. Did a 70 mile ride Saturday. Should have been closer to 90 but ran out of daylight and called wife to come pick me up. But on Saturday I passed 500 miles on my computer, then today because of my first century of the year I passed 600 miles. I'm now at 638 miles for the year. The 2 rides I did this weekend are my longest rides to date so far. |
b_rider,
good for you just keep raking up those miles, and you won't even notice that you've hit the 10,000 miles on your computer, |
Congrats on the big rides! I had a few good sized rides myself, but none as long as yours :)
I'm still waiting to do my first century. I had planed on doing one two weeks ago, but we had a "microburst" wind storm, with winds hitting 65MPH! I decided to skip that day :) |
Thanks guys. Joe when do you have a century planned for then?
I did forget to mention, I also did something else unexpected this past holiday weekend too. Did a 70 mile ride Saturday. Should have been closer to 90 but ran out of daylight and called wife to come pick me up. But on Saturday I passed 500 miles on my computer, then on Monday because of my first century of the year I passed 600 miles. I'm now at 638 miles for the year. The 2 rides I did this weekend are my longest rides to date so far. Tonight is going to be a short and sweet recovery ride. Around 20 to 25 miles. |
Glad to hear it was so easy for you. I ride a century this Sunday. I signed up for fund raising and now really enjoy getting out on my bike. It's addicting! Furthest I've ridden in one day is 75 miles. My quads were beginning to burn going up hills at that point.
I had dinner tonight with a bunch of coworkers. Turns out one is helping a friend run a century ... that is RUN a century - on foot!!! In one day! That sounds crazy! ---That makes riding a century seem like a piece of cake! :) Sarah |
hiya.. where is this century run.. in wisconsin?..
i am doing a 125kms run in August. but it involves three mountains and one big river.. in Alberta. we have 24 hours to do it in. they have cycling in sept. and snowshoeing in january.. if i have any energy and money left i am going to attempt those also. www.canadiandeathrace.com biking a century for me is a lot easier..lol |
yep, the century run is in wisconsin. has to complete in 36 hours i think. they get a spotter to run with after dark.
wow! |
Running a century. I can not even imagine how difficult that would be. Hats off to this person doing it. They have my respect.
Yes the century I did was easy. But I am planing a more difficult one to ride the weekend of June 8th. This one will be with hills. I completed the one I did Monday in less then 7 hrs. I hope to do the same when I ride the one with hills. Remember I ride a recumbent. Not the easiest bike in the world to ride up a hill. The reason I'm doing all of this is I am riding the IOWA MS 150 at the end of June. I don't know about the MS 150's in other states but Iowa's is one of the toughest. Its pretty much nothing but 2 days of hill climbing. |
good luck brider. A recumbent eh? Yeah, hills must be a bear! You'll do fine after riding the centuries.
