What are these things on this fork?

Hello,

New Fuji Crosstown 2.3 for the SO. Noticed some details on the fork I don't understand the purpose of: View image: 0511141849a

I see the fender mounts down at the bottom, but the two capped bumps on the right and the one on the left are mysteries to me. Are they for anything?

Rack mounts for front panniers. They may or may not be threaded at this point. I guess not threaded as they have a cap in them. If they were threaded they would probably have a stainless screw in them.

MEversbergII 05-12-14 03:30 PM

Oh, neat. Why three instead of two or four?

M.

Little Darwin 05-12-14 08:09 PM

That seems to be in the wrong spot for a rack boss... But I don't have an alternative explanation.

i have a theory
parts for other fujis
the same factory

Disk brake mounts ?

yugyug 05-13-14 06:53 AM

Its a suspension fork right? So probably not rack mounts. Disc brake mounts seems logical. If so its good, gives you an upgrade path if you want it.

MEversbergII 05-13-14 07:03 AM

Yep, suspension fork. My only other guess was overpressure blowout (had that happen once on another bike with shocks). I thought disc brakes had actual tabs that came out 90 deg. from the fork? (Like this one: http://galluscycles.files.wordpress....3/img_1629.jpg)

Also, I don't think I've ever seen any on the right side - always the left.

Disc caliper mounts for post mount type. The tabs are the ISO type mount. Most calipers available today will mount right up to the post mounts without the adapter necessary for the ISO type.

They are how it was cast.. I was not there.. & I dont speak or read Chinese.. to know, even if they told me.

Its a low end fork .. I see .. There are 2 tabs, but 1 per leg, But there, mudguard stays can be fitted ..

not 2 on the left leg for a disc brake ... though the casting has the clearance cast in the disc .. but no mount for the disc ..

I have used the 5mm threaded holes on the forks Trek used on their comfort bikes and bent the mudguard struts at a 90 degree bend
to use them . those forks lacked the lower tab to fit the struts on more simply ..

but post mounts are 6x1 thread and stick out more, an are beefier for the braking forces..

The Ouija board is not doing the job either. ..I think you need another squirrel cage to occupy your attention .. :popcorn

the problem may be inscrutable , as there is no one on this forum working in that factory department ..

Look closer. It's hard to pick out due to the lighting on the photo, but I'm pretty sure there is a second mount down near the bottom. I'm sticking with my theory for now.

what i was trying to say
is that the fork is likely also used on other bikes that include accessories to match the holes
or fuji got a really good deal on a batch of forks that just happened to have non standard mounts for something

fietsbob 05-13-14 10:11 AM

I see 1 tab and the lever for the QR pointing down. on the left ..

Maybe its purpose was in the making of the fork itself, , fitting a JIG in the machining steps.

I rarely ever make sense out of what he says :/

To remedy the lighting issue, I have added arrows: http://s27.postimg.org/qpcp9komr/0511141849ab.jpg

There's two on the right, one on the left. Bottom tabs are for fenders/racks, which I get. So, doubting they are discs since discs always seem to be on the left (where there is only one hole). Their odd number makes me wonder if they're for anything at all, since anything you mount is going to want something matching on the other side of the bike?

OK, I didn't even notice the ones on the right leg, I was focusing on the left.(probably because the picture opens over size for my screen and I didn't scroll over) My wife's Fuji Crosstown has a RST fork that also has some strange bosses that I can't figure out the purpose of, but they don't match yours.

slorollin 05-13-14 10:27 AM

Those are the drain plugs for the top tube urinal reservoir which is compatible with most major catheter brands or the optional Fuji Fun Funnel. Fuji thinks of everything.

Interestingly, this is also Fuji Crosstown (2.3).

fietsbob 05-13-14 11:03 AM

This all being asked on the bosses time? get back to work ...!

LuckySailor 05-13-14 11:09 AM

Nope, sorry, I'm wrong. Took another look at the picture and scrolled down this time. Wrong position for racks.

My wife's bike is a 2008 1.0. Fuji's numbering system has lower numbers for higher tier bikes.

BlazingPedals 05-13-14 02:18 PM

I think they're for holding pie. I'm sure I'm wrong, too; but at least my guess would taste good!

fietsbob 05-13-14 06:30 PM

Companies that make bikes under multiple brands buy forks in truck loads from othe r companies that make the forks ,
also calling them by several brand names

way out here on the consumer end a long ways from sources of any of that .. we throw darts at guesses ..

for something to do ..

Dudelsack 05-13-14 06:58 PM

Maybe they're just forking with ya.

Some Suntour forks have mounting holes for attaching a cable guide for a headlight that runs on a hub dynamo.

Page 96 & 97 of the 2014 Suntour Catalog you can see the cable guide:
http://issuu.com/why_gbr/docs/srs-2k14-low

The cable guide isn't used in the following photo but the cable is attached using the mounting holes.

Photo: http://www.electricbikemag.co.uk/Ima...ews/daum06.jpg

The two holes that are opposite each other are fender mounts for certain types of fenders.

Here's some photos:
