Cycling in SC
What's it like cycling in South Carolina? Especially the greater Charleston area? Are there adequate bike lanes in most places? Any info would be appreciated.

Downtown Charleston has no bike lanes. However, I saw lots of bikes when I was there last fall. If you are accustomed to commuting traffic you will do fine. All in all a pretty laid back place to be. Enjoy!

Myrtle Beach has bike lanes all over the place, including the entirety of Ocean Boulevard. It's really nice to ride along the ocean for miles.
It's absolutely dead flat here. The only hill in any of my routes is a road that overpasses a golf cart path at one of our 100+ golf courses.
The police are very friendly. The bicycle cops will even race you for a few blocks if they have the time.
Most drivers are very courteous and give bikers plenty of room. The only problem is that the golfers start getting drunk and hitting the strip joints by 3pm. After that, the tourists start getting loaded. So, by 6pm, an estimated 60% of our drivers have been drinking... so you have to use an extra degree of care when riding in the evening.
By the way, it was 69 degrees and sunny today. Excellent cycling weather!

suntreader: We own a condo down in Myrtle Beach (behind the Arrowhead golf course off of Burcale). Next time I head down that way I'd like to hook up with you for a ride, if possible.

I may be moving this summer. I'm a United Methodist minister and I expect to be sent to a new church in June... don't know where yet... probably in this part of the state. However, I'll keep my home here, so get in touch through the forum's personal messaging system.
I haven't ridden in the Arrowhead area. (I live two blocks from the beach.) However, I would think that some parts of that area would be pretty good. I'd stay off Burcale, though... too easy to get flattened, especially on the new road.
Send a PM if you want my email address.

Get used to riding in traffic, road rage, and poor drivers. South Carolina sucks for cycling.

If you're interested in riding in the Charleston area, you may want to check out Charleston Cycle Fest. Something for everybody in some great venues.
