Biking to work ... in Holland

As I was eating my breakfast today (and since today is a religious holiday thus no newspaper delivery) I glanced at my Dutch biking magazine (Vogelvrije Fietser) to have something to read.

The article dealt with the need for even more bike paths here and gave some general statistics to back up that claim.

I found it interesting that 25 percent bike of all Dutch workers bike to their job, though to be honest (according to that article), 61 percent of all inhabitants live within 15 km \ 9+ miles of their work. Why wouldn't you bike to work is the real question I would think.

I suppose many of the remainder take public transport or walk? Just tonight I was talking to a Dutch girl who mentioned not many of her friends under 30 own cars - I think she said 1 in 10 or something....

Europe has a whole different urban planning design which has developed over hundreds of years though....

One of the most amazing things I've seen here is a below ground cloverleaf intersection just for bicycles.

I had some relatives living in The Netherlands for a few years.
They prefer to take the tram and/or bus to work.
Me every time I visited; I tried to get my hands on a bike. :)
