Mailing Bicycles from Japan

Ok would really appreciate some advice!
Finishing a tour in Japan in about 6 weeks and would like to mail our two bikes home from there....

From all the info I can find, japan post won't take it as max length + 2x(width+height) = 3m or 2m depending in country...

Then I contacted a couple of shipping companies and so far they will quote only for min 1 cubic meter (about double the space I need) for about usd$600 which is A LOT!

We don't finish our travel in Japan so taking the bikes with us on each leg will likely be more expensive (as the low-cost carriers will charge a lot for the bikes)

Anybody had any experience shipping from Japan?

Too bad you can't bring it back on the plane as that would be the easiest solution. I once brought back an electric piano from Tokyo and had the music store prepare the package for the flight.

My only suggestion is to ask someone to bring it back with them as their own baggage.

I do find the price you mentioned ridiculously high. I hope you can come up with a reasonably priced solution. Sorry not to be of any real help.

Bikes: This list got too long: several ‘bents, an urban utility e-bike, and a dahon D7 that my daughter has absconded with.

If you want bad, just try bringing a recumbent from China. For all intents and purposes, it can't be done; I will end up leaving it behind.

$600 is pretty high, but more palatable if it's for the two bikes packaged together as one rather than $600 each. How about checking with some big LBSs there and see if they have any suggestions.

Air Freight is Expensive . they bill by box size or weight and charge the higher of the 2.

thats why most commerce is in container ships..

Maybe you can find a freight forwarder around one of the Shipping Ports and get it sent by surface freight?

Find a folder you can bring on the flight; that's the only thing I can think of.

Try these guys. They basically let you use their FedEx account for a discount.
