Question about helmets
 

Sorry if this is the wrong forum... but can someone give me the lowdown on helmets... Is there really any difference safety wise between a $50 dollar helmet and a $200 dollar one?

cheaper ones wont have as good a airflow as the racers wear.

Both of the above answers are correct. All helmets have to meet the same minimum standard. The more expensive ones are lighter and have better air flow, so your head remains cooler. The way they adjust to fit your head is also better/more convenient on the more expensive ones.

Find the cheapest comfortable helmet and go with that.

I have several helmets, none of which cost $200. Sometimes I don't want a lot of cooling, like in the winter. So my advice is to do like has been mentioned and get any you like and feel good to you. Just make sure they have the certification sticker and are not just a novelty helmet.

Safety wise, there is little difference. They all must pass the appropriate testing standards -- SNELL, ANSI, CPSC. The more expensive helmet should be lighter, better ventilated more comfortable and possibly more aerodynamic.

Here in Boston, the Hubway bike share has made Bell Adrenaline helmets available for like $10. I got a couple of them last year when I first got started (one for work, one for home). As others said, safety is not an issue with the cheap ones. I will say that the helmet I have has a certain bulbous look to it that doesn't look too cool now that I'm riding a road bike seriously. So I may have to get something a little more aero and streamlined. But it's a purely aesthetic situation

No, all have to pass the same test. Some mt bike helmets have some more coverage on the lower rear part of the helmet. The $ 200.00 helmet is going to have more air vents and weigh 2 oz less.

While all helmets have to pass the same tests, there are some practical differences that can arise because of a helmet's specific fit. Some helmets might fit the shape of your head better than others, especially for large or small heads.

If in doubt, try it on before you buy it. Preferably with someone you trust to make sure it covers your head adequately.
