Can you expand a bit on what you mean?

Are you talking about the process from couch to racer?

Are you talking about making your way through the categories?

Are you talking about hours of cycling per week?

Another question...

What kind of racing?

Also, there is a forum or two here specifically for racing discussions... you may want to ask there, although I am sure people in this forum will provide as much guidance as they can.

I think there are also some racers that hang out in the 50+ forum, that may be able to help.

The answer.....

As much as you can afford, based on family, work and your own personal life.

Cat 5 = minimum 6 hours a week.

Cat 1 = 20 hours a week will do you good.

Senior? Most of the masters racers I know train a minimum of about 12 hours per week, some of them much more.

CDR got the bronze at the state crit championships on 2 hours a week. I'm up to 3 hours a week, and may give it a go later this month. But then CDR and I have a lot of experience sucking wheel, and it's a short flat race.

CDR has been doing this a long time, and can draft like the Devil himself, as far as I can tell from his videos. Nobody who has to ask about training times is going to be close to that level of competence, or able to bridge the gap on two hours a week.

Having said that, when I said that most of the masters I knew trained more than 12 hours per week, I was thinking of road racing rather than crit specialists.

Or, how much time do professionals spend training?

47 year old Cat 3. I average about 11 per week. No results this year to speak of, but I don't get dropped either.
