Need advice on what may be wrong with my shifters
I have a very interesting problem, i have a cannondale R400 road bike, with a shimano sora shifter/brake dowacky, i was testing a deraileur adjustment, it didn't work out well (this bike seems to need constant tuning), the rear deraileur wouldn't upshift when i shifted in harder gears, thats not the problem i need help with in this thread though (yet). Very suddenly the shifter locked up, and would only shift up one and down 1 gear, then after a few minutes wouldn't go into any other gear. When i pulled out the cable it has broken strands in the area inside the shifter (cause of the problems or symptom, i don't know). Also the end wont fit back into the shifter anymore. Has anyone had something like this happen, and have any insight how to get the thing working, since its a long bike ride to the bike shop.
Thanks
Thanks

Unless you want to buy a cable cutter etc., it's probably much simpler to take it to the LBS.
I do most my own repairs, but for a one time repair, it's hard to justify the cost of the tool(s).
My LBS charged me $12 to replace a RDER cable. Cable end was finished up nicely with the little metal cap, instead of all frayed out, like it would have been if I "trimmed" it.

on my previous bike 5 years ago, i would take it in for deraileur adjustments almost always..luckily it didnt have to many problems with it after a couple of trips..i always kept my chain nice and clean, and put a dab of loc tite on the set screws on the deraileur to help them stay set. It can be annoying doing deraileur adjustments, if your shop will do it for a small fee, or free which is even better..better to let them handle those things. Brakes, stems, tires, lube/cleaning..i do that stuff..if i touch a deraileur it's FUBAR though.
