And now, for something just a little bit different
 
How about a 4 speed bike with no shifters or cables. I did it by pairing a Sclumpf speed drive with a Sturmey Archer S2C hub.
The gear inch range is kind of high with a 17 tooth cog and a 27 tooth chain ring. Changing to a 21 tooth cog will put the gear inch range at about 32 to 73 which should be just about right.

Interesting,but those are some big jumps between the 'gears'.

Yes, but they are all useful gears for a street machine where some grades may be encountered. It's certainly not for the performance rider that has to keep the cadence constant.
for my purposes, I think it's going to be great.
