... to lock up a bike?

I just left work for my lunchbreak and spotted a new-ish Trek MTB on a nearby bikerack that was screaming to be stolen.
It was parked in one of those comb-style racks, with only a cable lock just casually tossed over the handlebars!
And this is on a college campus!
I have a sneaking suspicion that the bike will be gone when I get back, and the cable lock will just be dangling there, alone.

I know this is a rather pointless thread to post, but I just had to vent my astonishment!

You should steal the lock :D

I actually had a crappy lock stolen off a bike when I was a kid. One of those chain ones with the 4 0-9 rings that take about 30 seconds to pick...

The campus police at the schools here set up decoy bikes to catch habitual predators.

Enjoy

Just don't take a bike...it's simple enough. :D

I like your style.

Makes me laugh just a little. There's a bike rack outside the supermarket and you see some really good gear there. Yesterday there was this ancient bike with gear levers like the old Frankenstein Power levers that took Quasimodo or whaterver, two hands to throw. I laughed at the size of the lock. Prolly a $100.00 lock on a ten cent bike. I suppose no one would steal it for it's value but it would not doubt be damned inconvenient to the owner if it went missing.

If I am not going to be long into the supermarket or drugstore or whatever I usually don't lock up. That is one perk about living in the south, everyone thinks that bikes are toys and worth nothing.

BostonFixed 03-31-05 08:31 PM

So, was the bike gone when you came back?? ;)

I agree with the Boone-Goon

(when I saw you were from boone I couldn't resist at least one knock at you!)

Believe it or not, no one ever looked sideways at my Speargun Blue Malvern Star Boys Bike. I guess some bikes just don't fill the needs of the average crim.

On Monday night in Pioneer Square, (seattle) I saw TWO COP bikes, without the cops, just
sitting there! kickstands up! I couldn't believe it. I walked by the bikes, glared into the
Tully's where, the cops were sittin' just drinkin' their coffee, walked by the bikes again to be sure that
they weren't locked in some super hero way that I couldn't detect, glared at the cops again , and then gave up. If the bloody cops don't lock their bikes, what's a civilian to do!

i had my $500 specialized sirrus stolen from my highschool bikestand......the dumb school cop didnt do a damn thing to try and find out who did it. But when some one writes something deragatory on the bathroom stalls he will do everything short of calling FBI to catch the criminal.

Dougmt 03-31-05 10:21 PM

You should have stolen one :-)

Bikes get stolen around here and I live in the south (Knoxville, TN). I had a bike stolen from the mall a LONG time ago when I ran in for like 10 minutes to pick something up really quick. Needless to say I lock up almost ALL the time now. About the only exception is when I go into a fast food joint. I just put it by the window and sit in the booth closest to it. :p
