When, in the 1960s, Gloria Steinem popularized the quote

"A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle",

did it result in more men riding bicycles- thrown together in the class of the unneeded?

Reminds me of a joke about a blind man passing by a fish market. Someone else can furnish the rest.

I don't know about that but Gary Fisher had a logo of a fish riding a bicycle in many advertisements.

I thought Florynce Kennedy was the originator of that phrase.

Patricia Dunn of Australia came up with it,

But Gloria Steinem made it famous.

Re Gary Fisher

I guess in that case, the Fish(er) did need the bicycle!

When I first heard it in the '60s I thought it was a wonderful metaphor, saying that a woman could be a whole person without a man to depend on. It freed up men too. They don't need to be locked into a role. Bicycles don't need fish either, but they can help you go fishing.
