How far does a bike messenger have to travel?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I was just toying with the idea of being a bike messenger. I'm not quite sure how far they're expected to travel. Is one city too limiting? How about three?

I used to ride an average of 40 km a day in a city with a small downtown core and not many long runs.

If you are interested ask the locals how far they ride in a day and understand that as a new guy, you probably won't be running as many trips until you get up to speed.

Bike messengers usually work as a division of a courier company that includes truck transport for larger items, car transport for smaller items over longer distances, bicycles for smaller items usually travelling around the downtown area of a city, and walkers for smaller items travelling within a certain portion of the downtown area of a city.

With the increased use of faxes, emails, etc. etc., and also the push to encourage office workers to be less sedentary (they go out and do their own deliveries now), the bicycle and walking divisions of courier companies have diminished ... even disappearing entirely in some areas.

Does your area still have bike messengers?
