Worst Places You've Gotten Stuck by a Goathead Thorn...

So, I've gotten enough thorn flats to try the Panaracer polyaramid liners. But, this morning, uncaffienated and before dawn, I stumbled into the bathroom and got a $#!#ing goathead puncture in my bare foot from a thorn in the !#!$*% bathmat! I've been lucky to get stuck the Tribulus terrestris near (or in) home. I'd love to hear some real thorny horror stories...

The first part of the process is getting 5 flats in 7 days. First solution is sliming the tires. Not long after that, I found myself riding in the dark with the headlight on. There was an interesting display of fluorescent green slime coming off the front tire, just like running through a puddle. And just like riding through a puddle, I went home with a really neat green stripe on the front of my shirt.

So, I tried tire liners of a brand I've forgotten. Well, we also have Russian Olive around. I found the leak and tracked down the cause. Russian Olive thorn right in the middle of the tire. It hit the liner and deflected off to the side, around but not through the liner. Same gosh darn result, though.

Girlfriend and I take a break on a touring day. It's 5 pm and we roll our bikes into a field. After patching four tires, some with multiple punctures, we hit the road again at 7:30pm. This was in southern Hungary.

Last house we lived at we had a couple of those. Beautiful trees for the high desert xeriscaped yard, wicked fsckers for feet, hands, paws and tires. IIRC, they are considered harmful invasive species in CA and OR now.

Love the bit about the slime-stripe. At least it got you home.

Russian Olive is an invasive species in New Mexico, too.

When you live in the desert Southwest, both your bike and your body will get punctured by these little boogers......frequently. When I was new to riding, about my third ride out, I learned why you carry a spare tube and a pump....walking home two miles sucked in ways I can't describe. I also learned why you ride a WIDE arc around wherever someone has mowed their parkway.....hitting a goathead is bad....hitting 40 of them at once defies description.
