hi-top basketball shoes
I usually wear stiff Merrel walking shoes but recently came across some awesome hi-top basketball shoes that I got a few yrs ago for racquetball. You think these would allow enough forward and back movement to ride with. I mean any significant drawback? I'd love to give them some use plus they are cool looking.

Feet go around in circles on a bike. not back and forth
IDK.. but big platform pedals will be a good idea.

Actually you can move your feet back and forth on platforms, I tried moving the Centre of my foot to the middle of the pedal for a stomp up a hill and it worked quite well. I am going to have a look for a pedal as wide as my foot to keep my little toe from going to sleep after a couple of hours in the saddle though.

For clarity, you should have said about position of the foot on the pedal .. yes ball of foot over pedal axis is better.
I use Ergon's pedals they are a curved so your shoe tends to place that part of your foot in the center of the pedal.
Hows the Fishing over there?

oh OK I'll remember that. didn't really think there'd be such misconception of what I meant hahaha. fishing? here is MASS? haven't had a hook in the water in more than a couple years. had some fresh striped bass grilled early-mid July last year it was fabulous. I caught 5 striper schoolies in an eddy at the tip of the Cape at Race Point several years back. they were grabbing anything you threw at them. I was using big heavy daredevil red/white spoons. if you're into freshwater. the Concord River at The Old North Bridge where the shot heard 'round the world was fired, has the best giant sunfish around the bridge pilings. had a great time fly fishing w my kids, we caught 20! and they were all pan sized! one thing to note that I would find out returning w my Mom to teach her fly fishing is that it's against national park policy to fish from shore! from a canoe is OK but not from shore! weird huh? what do you fish in Oregon? my brother is workign his way up the coast to the Canadian Rockies in a van/camper as we type ...
