Torn Between Surly and Tubus Cosmo Rear Racks

I'm currently building a wish list for a future 58cm 26" Surly Disc Trucker. I have the front rack narrowed down to a Surly, although I'm still researching about a rear rack.

Weight is no issue. I think I'm preferring steel for the heavy duty-ness. Yes, I will Frame Saver spray it if it's non-stainless, along with protecting it from rubbing of panniers, and use blue Loctite and plug holes with bolts.

From the many hours of reading online, I'm thinking a Surly or Tubus Cosmo. The problems are, neither are a perfect rack for me. The Surly doesn't have lower horizontal bars for lowering panniers (I'll also be using an Ortlieb Travel-Biker for a trunk bag). And the Cosmo has a smaller platform -- for when I don't have the Travel-Biker mounted. I've also read a couple reports of the Cosmo breaking at welds, although I believe these are very rare instances.

I'm leaning more towards the Tubus Cosmo. If Surly had lower horizontal bars, I'd be sold (I hope you're reading this, Surly -- You'd sell more rear racks).

I don't want aluminum such as Old Man Mountain or Jandd. Any other ideas of racks that I haven't exhausted yet?

Knowing Surly and their "cover all aspects" of design, I'm disappointed that they didn't design their rear rack with a lower rail.

Im just wanting a bombproof large rack with all the bells and whistles even though I doubt I will ever load them to the 80-88 lb limit. A Surly Trailer Bill and Extrawheel and B.O.B. trailers are also on my list for luxury touring/camping.

P.S. The main panniers I'll be using will be Arkel GT-54, with some use of Arkel Bug or Commuter bags. I don't believe the GT-54's will work with an Ortlieb Travel-Biker on a Surly rear rack???

Is there an adaptor for the Surly rack to lower the panniers?

Thanks a ton in advance!

I suggest you post this question on the Touring forum.

Any other ideas of racks that I haven't exhausted yet?

Thanks. Will do. I forgot about those Bruce Gordon racks. Things sure are beautiful and look very robust. I'm pretty sure I want a lower horizontal bar though.

I put a Surly Nice Rack on my Stratus. I must say that it is a thing of beauty. Very impressed with the quality and design. You're right, no lower pack mounts. But the Nice Rack is extemely adjustable. Plus, it's going on a 26" wheel. Might be low enough? Just saying.
And, don't forget, it's a Nice Rack. I'm planning a LHT 26" build myself and I'll be going with a Nice Rack.
