Chain gets stuck (front derailleur...between gear 2 and 3). How to avoid this?

My front derailleur is pretty much set the way it is by me. Putting it to 3, takes a bit of an effort....but it works perfectly. So....I dont really wanna mess with it.

Now...what happens is that every now and then...when changing from 2 to 3 or vice versa, it gets stuck. A little bit pedal movement and things are back to normal.

I am wondering what causes it? It has happened like 4 times in a months but I'd really like to avoid it happening at all.

It normally happens when I am pedalling fast and I need to change to a higher gear. It might be because of the high RPM..that might throw the chain a bit off its course. Any thoughts on this?

Cheers

The chain can't get caught between rings if the chain won't fit there in the first place. Chain too narrow for the crankset? Wrong spacers? Some variation of chain suck that lube would fix?

If I read your post correctly, the chain is actually caught between two rings? Not normal operation.

Is either chainring bent or at a slight angle?

Dont think so. Looked at them if it was all good, but it seems to have no problems at all.

I think I reach a high RPM for the gear I am in and the while I am pedalling and changing, I throw the chain slightly off of its original course with my rapid pedalling and that causes the problem. I might be wrong. I think I'll take it to the store and have it looked at.

Sounds like prolly just user error. Front rings have pretty big gaps in range, usually like 10+ teeth. This takes more effort than the couple tooth change-ups in the rear, and you have to be pedaling a little faster. Also, front derailleurs aren't perfectly indexed;they have 'half clicks' that allow you to trim them to avoid rub when you're in different rear gears.

If putting the bike in the big ring is difficult, you may need to tighten the cable. Park Tool's site shows you how to do this.

I guess the definition of "stuck" needs to be clarified. What crank are you using?

The o ly time I've seen a chain between rings was using a 7 or 8 speed chainring with a 10 speed (narrower) chain. The edge of the chain would ride on the tips of the teeth and not drop onto the small ring when moving down from the big ring. Fixed it by putting the proper rings back on there.

It doesn't happen when I pay attention to the task , using the lever to move the FD, by hand .

If anything, I think that pedalling at a high cadence should help the shifting rather than hurt it, because the chain isn't under high tension when the FD is trying to move it back and forth.

Had a crank that was missing a ramp pin that would do that.
