A long time ago, let’s say 1973, riding in San Diego county near Miramar air base out east from the coast. Great riding back then on the wide open mesa before it became solid suburbia. A car with kids threw out a drink with ice and it bounced near my pedals. Seems a cop was behind and saw that. He passed us all and as I caught up to see he had pulled over the mom in a station wagon. He was chewing out the kids as I passed. Good times.

Riding to work in west Berkeley a kid in a car that was headed toward me as oncoming traffic hurled a grapefruit and hit me on the left shoulder. Didn't crash, but it hurt like hell and left a large purple bruise for about a week.
There have been times riding in Oakland where I was pretty convinced people were trying to run me off the road.
Bay area cycling is not for the faint of heart....

I haven't had anything thrown at me while riding, but there was this one time someone attempted to steal from my backpack, while I was mowing at pedestrian speed through a crowd in the old town. Unsuccessfully though.

I had some dude with a huge beard in a Hippie van throw a chocolate shake at me. I ducked, hit the rider behind me square on the chest. I laughed for a half an hour over that.

Maybe the super cute bike helps?
Ugh, if I had a dollar for every time young guys made those shrieking noises...well, I'd have a lot of dollars. I've also been called the usual term that can also designate a female dog, as well as slurs that are derogatory toward racial groups and sexual orientations with which I do not identify. The barking - that's what gets me. Why do people bark? I've started barking back.
Drivers just don't like me - they must know I'm not a nice gal. /rant

I’m glad you have a sense of humor about it. My favorite woman cyclist-retaliates-brilliantly-against-motorist, comes from one of my wife’s grad school classmates, who managed, semi-intentionally, to hurl her ill-settled lunch through the driver’s open window at a stoplight.

MoAlpha I could never hope to reach that level of epic. I'm the one who comes up with the perfect comeback 20 minutes later.

Cycleway town
When we were young drivers, we used to turn our windscreen washer nozzles around so we could squirt cyclists..
tbf they shouldn't have been on the roads in the first place. The reluctance to use the cycleways instead was even stronger then, almost as if they wanted to get killed.

I have had many things thrown at me. The only thing to actually hit me was a boiled egg from a car passing me. I went off the road into a ditch that had just been bushhogged and was lucky not to have been impaled or killed.

A friend of mine had a redneck lean out the passenger window of a truck and take a swing at him while he was riding in the bike lane. Fortunately the guy missed hitting him. That got me thinking about getting an on board camera, one pointing front, the other to the rear.

I had a bag of coins fall out of an armored truck and explode in front me. I would have stopped to pick them up but my bike can't stop on a dime...

I have two stories to tell that you all might appreciate:
Riding along the road on our mountain bikes and someone comes past with their arm out the car window trying to slap my a#r/s@e. They missed me but got in a lot closer for my mate up ahead and he got a good loud slap. The 'slapper' however, completely miss-judged the speed difference and hadn't really considered how he was going to get his arm back into the car! from the crack and scream we suspect he might have broken his arm against the door pillar.
Another time I was on my own slogging up a long straight drag. A white van came past and out flew a beer can full of urine, it bounced off my wheel and I got an unpleasant spattering. The van sped off into the distance but before disappearing from view I saw it pull over. When I caught up, the van was parked in the pub car park, up against a wall with the passenger window half open. All I will say is that I needed a leek and the wall was just the right height. I will always regret not having the balls to hang around and watch that guy sit down.

I've never had anything thrown at me though I have had a car door open in my path and nearly hit me.
I'm reminded of the following scene from L.A. Story ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pmRw_CNCgU

I’ve had quite a few things thrown at me from cars, but the scariest was lit firecrackers when I was riding home from a late night job around 3am going really fast down a long hill. They hit me on the side of my helmet. If I hadn’t been able to maintain control of my bike it probably would’ve been a really bad wreck.

So it seems there may be an advantage to being a woman on a bike. I've never had anything thrown at me, but once some young guy in a car shrieked at the top of his lungs while passing me. I managed to not actually jump out of my skin, but it was close. Another time a dude -- I mean dud -- made a shooting finger and a quiet pow sound while passing.
At least it was the passengers and not the drivers doing it.

A diesel truck once passed me on the state park road i frequently ride (along with hundreds of other cyclists); intentionally slowed down for me to catch up, then layed into the throttle and left me in a cloud of choking black smoke. Nice.
